Mutual aid, garden hose douses Jay fire

JAY – The quick actions of a homeowner and mutual aid response were credited in knocking down a fire that spread into the walls of a residence off the Farrington Road this morning.

Assistant Chief Jim Shink said that Jay Fire Department and mutual aid units from surrounding towns were dispatched to 1 Alice’s Way after the homeowner reported fire spreading into a wall. One Jay engine and a Wilton unit were the first on the scene, Shink said, with the homeowner knocking down most of the fire with a garden hose. Those units assisted in knocking down the fire and mopping up.

In addition to Jay Fire and Rescue and mutual aid from Wilton, responding towns included East Dixfield, Livermore Falls and Livermore. Farmington also sent personnel to provide Rapid Intervention Team coverage, in case a structure fire results in injured or trapped firefighters.

“The mutual aid helped out,” Shink said, crediting the homeowner for dousing the fire. “It was a good save.”

The home is listed as being owned by David and Marisela Gould, according to town tax data.

A plugged chimney is believed to have been responsible for the fire.
