NEW SHARON – A local man was arrested on a number of charges Tuesday evening, after police say he attempted to flee a Franklin County Sheriff’s Department cruiser at 92 mph down the Weeks Mills Road.

Benjamin Savage, 21 of New Sharon, was arrested and charged with eluding an officer, a Class C felony, as well as misdemeanor driving to endanger and speeding in excess of 30 mph. He was also charged with a civil violation of possessing marijuana at the Franklin County Detention Center.

According to Sheriff Scott Nichols, Cpl. Nathan Bean was on patrol on Route 2 Tuesday at approximately 6:55 p.m. when he clocked a blue 2002 Chevrolet going 72 mph in a 55 mph zone. Bean turned to follow the vehicle, at which point the blue car accelerated away. The vehicle turned onto the Weeks Mills Road, with Bean maintaining a visual and following with his emergency lights active. According to Nichols, Bean clocked the driver at 92 mph at this point, in a 45 mph zone.

The vehicle did stop after a couple of miles, and Bean identified the driver as Savage. The New Sharon man informed Bean that he had attempted to elude police because he was “scared,” according to Nichols, with the male and female passengers in his vehicle ordering him to stop.

Savage was arrested and transported to Franklin County Detention Center.
