BYRON – A Portland woman was rescued by local first responders, volunteers and Maine Warden Service personnel Tuesday evening, after she broke her leg while climbing rocks on Tumbledown Mountain.

According to Maine Warden Service spokesman Cpl. John MacDonald, Maris Toland, 28 of Portland, was rock climbing when she fell and suffered a compound leg fracture. Wardens responded just after 8 p.m., along with Mahoosuc Search and Rescue and fire department personnel from Mexico, Roxbury, Weld, Rumford, Peru and Dixfield. Also assisting in the rescue were 31 volunteers and staff of Mt. Blue State Park.

“In an exhaustive effort in very difficult terrain,” MacDonald said in a statement released Wednesday morning, “Toland was carried down the mountain throughout the night and flown by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland this morning.”

MacDonald noted that the warden service wanted to thank all assisting agencies and volunteers for their efforts in extricating Toland from Tumbledown Mountain.
