Sheriff not running for New Sharon selectman

NEW SHARON – The sheriff of Franklin County will not be among the candidates running for an open selectman’s seat at Saturday’s special town meeting.

Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols, Sr. and resident Milton Sinclair had both expressed interest to fill the seat vacated after Selectman Forrest Bonney resigned at the March 18 board meeting. This resignation followed the decision by voters at the annual town meeting to not reelect longtime First Selectman Maynard Webster. Challenger Travis Pond was elected to fill the position with 127 votes to Webster’s 83 votes.

Lorna Nichols, Sheriff Nichols wife, was elected in 2014 and is now the longest-standing member of the board.

Nichols said today that he would not be running for the position. In New Sharon, candidates are selected from the floor, without any sort of nomination paper process.

“I am happy to see at least one candidate running and perhaps more – we will see tomorrow,” Nichols said. “It’s good to see other folks from town stepping up.”

The special town meeting on Saturday, April 18 begins at 9 a.m.
