Smith Avenue customers lose water, boil order issued

1 min read

JAY – The Jay Village Water District has put out a boil water order until further notice. The order will be effective once a break in a waterline on Smith Avenue is fixed and the water comes back on.

Only the customers who lost water need to boil it.

The water line broke Friday morning and was a major break, according to Jay Village Water District’s Ronald Moreau. A crew is currently working on the repairs and hopes to have the water back on soon.

Once water returns, the district is required to bring samples to a laboratory in Augusta to be tested for E.coli and coliform bacteria. The district will make an announcement when customers can stop boiling water.

Per Superintendent Mike Wells, affected customers should boil water for one minute. That includes water that they plan to drink, use to brush their teeth and make ice cubes. After the water is boiled, it can be put in the refrigerator.

The waterlines are aging and are at least 60 years old, Moreau noted in a statement released Friday. There have been many breaks in lines in the Smith Avenue area. These lines are slated to be replaced this fall as part of a larger 2015 infrastructure upgrade project.

  1. So, here it is Wednesday morning….we are still boiling water that we’re paying full price for. Wondering how much money McD’s has lost because they can’t sell most of their beverages. A water test shouldn’t take this long to complete – or is it don’e but just not reported?
