Wednesday: Another boil-water order in effect in Jay

1 min read

JULY 29, 2015 – 4:45 p.m. JAY – The Jay Village Water District has put out a boil-water order until further notice that will be effective once a break in a waterline on Main Street is fixed and the water comes back on, said Ronald J. Moreau, district treasurer.

Only those customers on Hyde, Spring Street and Forest Circle who lost water need to boil it. The water line broke as a result of the construction on Route 4 Wednesday. A crew is currently working on the repairs and anticipates that water will be restored to all customers with an hour.

Once water returns, the district is required to bring samples to a laboratory in Augusta to be tested for E.coli and coliform bacteria. The district will make an announcement when customers can stop boiling water.

Per Superintendent Mike Wells, affected customers should boil water for one minute. That includes water that they plan to drink, use to brush their teeth and make ice cubes. After the water is boiled, it can be put in the refrigerator.

  1. At this rate, the town of Jay should a a whole new delivery system before too long! :)

  2. It was shooting out of the ground like old faithful. The Excavator was blocking it so cars could go by.

  3. For those of us living in Jay, this is becoming a huge issue. I believe this is the 13th time since May we have been without water, and then a handful of times have had to spend days boiling it for any kind of use. It’s wearing on everyone, and is no longer funny. Maybe the town should pay for the meals we need to eat out when this “surprise” hits, or put us all up in a hotel, or not make us pay the water bill for a month (we’re not able to use it anyway). Some of the local businesses have lost revenue due to this. We may need someone who knows what they’re doing actually fix whatever problem this is. Can you tell I’ve had it???

  4. It certainly sounds like Jay needs to get together and approve some plans and funds to resolve this issue. I’m sure the solution is expensive and time consuming, but a new boil order every other week must be exhausting, irritating and very difficult. We looked at a house there once, it was nice but I am very glad we didn’t buy.

  5. As the town of Jay keeps having water breaks and as many residents have to boil water for a few days, I hope you are taking the time to thank Mike Wells for all his hard work. Not only does Mike work full time at Verso, he does much of the work on the water breaks alone where in earlier days it was hired out by the Superintendent and charged to the town. Mike does it himself whenever he can. Even his wife, Kathy, has been out there helping him. He can’t take a vacation because he fears a water break. It is time for the town of Jay to finance the replacement of all the old lines causing these breaks. Please take the time to thank Mike Wells for what he does!

  6. Mercedes, I too live in Jay but fortunately not in the village. The problem isn’t needed someone who knows what they are doing to fix the problem. The problem is that the pipes are super old, so when the replace some of the piping and charge up the section the older pipes that aren’t fix burst. How do they fix it? They replace the entire length of pipe and keep the entire village without water for weeks.

Also, the town putting you up in a hotel is absurd. I’m not putting my tax dollars in the coffer to have you spend a night in a hotel because you don’t plan ahead. 13th time without water? Probably should start stocking up on bottled water.

  7. I know everyone is tired of the water breaks in Jay , but so is Mike and the kind men that are always there to help him out when he needs them . He doesn’t know what he would do without them . He has gone for long periods of time without eating or sleeping to make sure everyone gets their water back on . I can only hope people can be understanding and realize this is not his fault . Thank you to all the guys that are willing to give him a hand. We all want this to get better .

  8. Martin Jones, thanks for your compassion for my neighbors and I as we continually buy water to fill up buckets in order to flush toilets, as we scrub our bathroom and kitchen sinks each time the brown water does decide to grace us with its presence, as we watch our children closely to make sure that when they brush their teeth they aren’t forgetting to NOT use the tap water we need to boil. Thanks for your sarcasm while we can’t do laundry, can’t wash dishes so have resorted to the wastefulness of paper plates, and god forbid we expect to shower. Thanks for caring about the local restaurant who has had to close early, who has lost business due to this, or to the hair salon who was in the middle of a color and had to go get buckets of clean water to compete their job. Plan ahead, you say? You may want to plan ahead before making such an absurd comment, and minimizing how we are all feeling in this area.

To the rest of you, we appreciate Mike Wells very much. This is NOT anything to do with him. The poor guy does everything he can to rectify situations that are completely out of control. This is a TOWN problem. He’s the unfortunate scapegoat. Thank you, Mike, for the broad shoulders you must have and your commitment to helping others at such a high cost to yourself.

  9. When Jay finally taxes Verso out of town everyone will be drinking from the river!

  10. Given the known propensity for breaks in this line, especially as it is being replaced, the contractor should have been required to bypass the main and run temporary lines to the residential areas and businesses. This is how it was done on the LFWD end of town…we received water through temporary direct connections while the main was replaced. It is inexcusable for there to be this much ongoing disruption when a few thousand feet of plastic tubing could avoid the problem altogether.

  11. Jason Mancine, thanks for your educated thoughts. I was not aware that this could have been a problem solver.
