EAST MADISON - Anne Billington Powell, 88, of East Madison, ME, died Saturday, July 21, 2012.

Nan, as she was called, was born May 3, 1924 in Jersey City, NJ and was predeceased by her parents, W. Stanley Billington and Nan Powers Billington and her biological parents, Hugh R. Billington and Mary Frances Miller Billington.

Her husband of 61 years, John W. Powell, Jr., "Jack" passed away in 2005. Nan and Jack lived almost 50 years in Mercerville (a suburb of Trenton), NJ before moving to East Madison, ME in 1990. Nan retired after more than 20 years as executive secretary for the State of New Jersey, Human Services, Medicaid. She had been working for Institutions and Agencies when, in 1967, Medicaid was created in New Jersey. She and her boss were the first two employees. Prior to employment, Nan was a housewife and "stay-at-home” Mom.

She is survived by her son, John W. Powell III "Jay" of West Windsor, NJ, her daughter, Susanne Powell Ketterer and son-in-law, Andrew Ketterer of East Madison, her grandson, Andrew Powell Ketterer of Pompano Beach, FL, and her sister, Gertrude B. Zickuhr "Billie" also of Pompano Beach. She is also survived by several nephews and a niece.

Nan was an active member of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Skowhegan. She enjoyed gardening and decorating, creating a lovely home in East Madison. Playing cards was a favorite activity. She loved the beach and the ocean and spent many hours at the Jersey Shore. Spending time with her family was very important to her especially spending time with her grandson, Andrew, the joy of her life.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 18 at 10 AM at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Skowhegan, ME.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Somerset Humane Society, 123 Middle Road, PO Box 453, Skowhegan, ME 04976.
