Arnold “Arnie” C. Saunders IV, of Waterville, died Feb. 6, 2016 after a long struggle with complications of diabetes.

“Arnie”, was born in 1943 in Chicago, but grew up in Cleveland Hts., Ohio on the “rowdy” end of Essex Rd. and a quiet block on Stratford Rd.

He attended University School, where he wrestled and pole vaulted with excellence, and where he made friends that lasted his lifetime and were generous with their support toward the end. Summers were spent with his family and cousins at the camp of his grandparents Ruth and John Lambert on Great Pond in Rome, Maine, where water skiing, motor boating, and looking for mischief were his teenage pursuits.

After graduating from Wittenberg University with a business degree, he soon moved to Maine, married and had two wonderful sons. He worked briefly for Diamond Match then the Holiday Inn in Waterville for 35 years. His sweet, quiet nature endeared him to all who knew him, even as his views on government, religion, and corporations made for some energetic conversation.

He is survived by his two sons, Brian of Portland, Maine, and Matthew, of Reno, Nevada; his sister, Hillary S. Schultz, and her husband, Peter, of Rome, Maine; his niece Katie Saunders Nesci, her husband, Michael, and their children, Norah and Michael John; his step-siblings Jeannine, Stephen, and Colin Furrer and Diane Furrer Holzheimer; his uncle Frederick W. Weston Jr. of Rome, Maine, and his children, Martha Feldmann, and Frederick W Weston III and his wife Karen; his uncle Donald R. Saunders, and his wife Betsy of Cleveland, Ohio, and their children Peter, Elizabeth, and James; and his cousins Sally Smith, Susie Curtis and Richard Saunders.

A graveside service will be held in the Spring at the Rome Village Cemetery, Rome, Maine. At his request there will be no funeral or visitation hours.
