NORTH TURNER – Barbara L. Hammond, 77, of North Turner, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday morning, Jan. 30, 2015, after a long illness.

She was born on Jan. 23, 1937, the daughter and only child of Marion (Brochu) and Maynard Bessey.  She grew up in South Paris, Maine.  She enjoyed many interests in her youth while also helping out with the family business, Bessey Foods.   After graduating from Paris High School she attended and graduated from Westbrook College in Portland.

She married Carlton (Bill) Hammond on April 21, 1957.  They were married for 58 years.  They originally lived and worked in the Buckfield area and later moved to Portland.  In 1977, they moved to North Turner.

Barbara will be remembered as a very outgoing, warm, friendly person.  She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  She was always very involved in her children’s activities.  She operated and assisted in many business ventures though out her life; most notably, CN Turner Co and Brettuns Dairy Bar.  She thoroughly enjoyed the social interaction with all the customers.

She was an avid snowmobiler in her day. She was very involved in her genealogy (Bessey/Besse) and organized many family reunions.  She took great pride in her family history and loved talking with all her relatives from around the state and country.  Barbara was very artistic and enjoyed painting.  She was fond of all animals leaving behind her beloved cats, Patty and Spike.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Bill of North Turner and her three children; Reggie and his wife Janet of Rangeley, Stacy Cobb and husband Derek of Wayne, and Darcy Moreau of Florida; eight grandchildren: Luke and Allison Hammond, Mitchell, Bryce and Gavin Cobb, and Dylan, Hannah and Lindsey Griswold.    She was also close to her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Barry and Ann Hammond of Livermore, as well as Dale Bessey from Livermore Falls.  She had great love for her family and friends.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Androscoggin Home Health Care and Hospice especially Tammy and Gretchen for their compassion and care for Barbara, the office of Dr. Erickson, and the nurses at the Fusion Center at CMMC for their wonderful care and company.  Also a Thank you to special friend Jillian for her devoted assistance in Barbara’s care and niece Jolene for her support during this time.

She was predeceased by special aunts, Gwen and Mary, and special friends, Lois and Shirley.

Private family services and interment will be at the New Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta. Funeral services are being cared for and provided by the Wiles Remembrance Center, 308 Franklin Road, Jay.   3. Barbara will be missed by many. We will never forget the wonderful times we had when we all got together in Turner snowmobiling. May you rest in peace.
