Bonnie R (Morris) Gilbert

SKOWHEGAN - Bonnie R (Morris) Gilbert passed away in her home early Sunday morning, Sept. 16, 2012,  after a long illness.

Born in Etowah, Arkansas, she resided in Skowhegan for 58 years. She is the daughter of William V. and Nina (Cokenour) Morris.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years G. John Gilbert and five children: Michael J Gilbert and his wife Jerri of Westford, Mass.; Vanessa R McSpadden and her husband James (Bub) of Freedom; W. David Gilbert and his wife Rosemary of Hermon; Robert P. Gilbert and his wife Deborah of Bristol, N.H.; and Joyce M Buchanan and her husband Scott of Clinton. She was the grandmother of 14 and great grandmother of 15.

After graduating from Manilla High School in Arkansas in 1945, she moved to Memphis and became a telephone operator. There she met her husband, who was in the Navy. After leaving the Navy, the young couple moved to Skowhegan, where they raised their family.

Bonnie’s careers included working at Southern Bell Telephone, Maine Spinning Mill, Solon Manufacturing, and Blueberry Woolen. First and foremost, she was a homemaker and mother.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, quilting, cooking and gardening. She was a faithful member of Canaan Calvary Church, where she enjoyed the fellowship of friends and family.

Visitation hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012 at the Canaan Calvary Church in Canaan with a funeral service Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Church. Interment following the service at the East Cemetery in Skowhegan. Reverend Al C. Buzzell and Kevin F. Brooks officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Canaan Calvary Church, PO Box 6, Canaan, Maine 04924.
