WATERVILLE – Bryant Edward Hoffman, 76, passed away on Oct. 4, 2015, at Lakewood Continuing Care Center after a long illness.

He was born on Aug. 3, 1940, in Glen Ridge, N.J., the son of Edward Walter Hoffman and Letitia Susan Maready Hoffman.

Bryant graduated from Colgate University in 1962, with a bachelor’s degree in English literature, then continued his studies in English literature and communications at Rutgers University obtaining masters and doctorate degrees in English literature from Rutgers University.

He was a university professor for many years and taught at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H. from 1966 to 1987. More recently, Bryant taught literature courses at the University of Maine at Augusta Senior College.

He also ran Ozark Career Services in Springfield, Missouri, from 1990 to 2000, and was the executive director of the Central/Western Maine Workforce Investment Board from 2000 to 2010, when he retired.

Bryant was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Winthrop, a volunteer at MaineGeneral Health in Augusta, a member of the Maine Poets Society and assisted with the Meals on Wheels program. He enjoyed teaching, literature, poetry, volunteering, and participating in many civic and community activities.

Bryant is survived by his daughter, Kirsten Hoffman of Boston, Mass.; son, Christian Hoffman of Lewiston, Maine; and sister, Patience Jane Gardener of Duxbury, Mass.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Winthrop,  located at Winthrop Center Friends church, 219 Winthrop Road, Winthrop.

In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations in Bryant’s memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168.
