MILFORD, Connecticut – Daniel J. Howard, Jr., 93, of Milford, beloved husband of the late Phyllis Viles Howard, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at the West Haven Veteran’s Hospital.

He was born in Mexico, Maine, to the late Daniel and Pearl Merrill Howard, Sr. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII as a technical sergeant and as a top turret gunner on a B-17.

Before retiring, he was a self-employed carpenter specializing in remodeling homes and businesses.

In December of 2015, Dan was presented with an American flag by Rep. Ferraro of Milford, Conn. that was flown over the Capitol bldg. in Hartford, Conn. for a day in his honor, also he was presented with a certificate of appreciation of his service from Connecticut and all of his WWII medals that were lost over the years that were presented by Sen. Tom Saviello of Maine at the request of Dan’s brother Robert.

Mr. Howard is survived by his devoted children: Cynthia Howard of Woodmont, Randall Howard of Maine, Cheryl and her husband Scott McCauley of Texas, stepson Arthur Daggett of Washington; grandchildren: Kevin McCauley and his wife Laura and Megan Torres and her husband Jesus and great-grandchildren, Joaquin and Pablo Torres, all of Texas.

He is also survived by his brothers: Norman Howard and wife Deborah, Charles Howard and wife Joline, Ralph Howard and wife Patsy, Ray Howard and wife Maureen, Robert Howard and wife Sheila, all of Salem Township and brother Frank Howard of Freeman Township; sisters: Roberta Avery, Kathleen Spencer and husband Reginald of Salem and Nancy McMullen and husband Mahlon of Scarborough; many cousins and nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his loving wife, Phyllis Viles Howard; his brother Arthur Howard of South Easton, Mass. and his sister Marilyn Frey of Salem Township.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the West Haven Veteran’s Hospital and Home Care Plus for the wonderful care they gave Dan.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, 135 N Broad St., Milford, Conn. A prayer service will follow the visitation. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the West Haven Veteran’s Hospital, 950 Campbell Ave., West Haven, CT 06516 or to the Mt. Abram Cemetery Association, Box 20, Charline Drive, Salem Township, ME 04983.

  2. He was a very good brother, all the way around & great father to his 3 children & stepfather to 1 stepson & good husband. He will be missed by many friends in Ct. & Maine & won’t have to suffer anymore. R>I>P> Jr.
