Donald William Handrahan Sr. (1931-2014)

FREEMAN TOWNSHIP – Donald William Handrahan Sr., 83, passed away unexpectedly at his son’s home in Freeman Township on Sept. 14, 2014.

He was born on July 2, 1931 in New Portland, the son of Albert and Alma (Durrell) Handrahan. He attended schools in New Portland. On May 2, 1955, he married Lynette Douglass in Phillips.

Donald served his country in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954, during the Korean War. After his discharge from military service, he drove a pulp truck for Odlin Thompson, did plowing for Walter Newell and worked in the woods for Jack Adams. In 1964, he went to work for Somerset Telephone Co (TDS) for the next 30 years, retiring in 1994.

He was a member of the Coffin, Hewey and Safford American Legion Post 173 in New Portland and the North American Hunting Club.

Donald enjoyed being in the woods, hunting and fishing, doing jigsaw puzzles, and reading. He loved spending time with family and friends, sharing favorite memories and he loved to help others.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lynette Handrahan of Freeman Township; his three daughters: Donette Maynard and husband John of New Portland, Robin Handrahan and companion Carl Manzer of St. James City, Florida, Stephenie Boucher and husband Peter of Kingfield; his four sons: Kenneth Handrahan of Freeman Township, Donald W. Handrahan II and significant other Chanda Moody of Freeman Township, Shane Handrahan and wife Lisa Kolek of Smithfield, R.I., David Handrahan of Freeman Township; 13 grandchildren: Johnny, Heather, Stacy, Tyler, Peter Dean, Barbaralyn, Shannon, Kevin, Sophie, Rylee, Judylynn, Jacob and Jessica; 13 great grandchildren: Justine, Dana, Alex, Hannah, Elijah, Kaetlin, Dylan, Elisabeth, Aden, Tucker, Noah, JD and Logan; his beloved cat, “Poop;” his two sisters: Jacquita Gordon of New Portland and Eleanor “Nellie” Arsenault of Moncton, New Brunswick.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers: Maynard, Arlo and Waldo; his sisters: Roberta Atwood and Joanne Skillings.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dan & Scott’s Cremation & Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington, ME 04938.

  1. Donald lived a long life and was well known. He was a true family man. I remember him and all his family when I was a child and lived in New Portland.RIP in peace Donald and my prayers and condolences to the family
