WHITINSVILLE, Mass. – Douglas-Homer Bates, 89, formerly of Wellington and Pascoag, R.I. died Thursday, Feb. 7 at St. Camillus Health Center.
He is predeceased by his girlfriend of 23 years, Caroline Salvas who passed away in Nov., 2012.
He is survived by her family, 1 son Kurt Salvas and his wife Izidia of Douglas, a daughter Gwen Daigneault and her husband John of Glendale, RI; 3 grandchildren
Caytlynn Daigneault, Hunter and Mason Salvas, and several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Born in Pascoag, RI on Nov. 30, 1923 he was the son of Edwin H. and Flora (Sisson) Bates and lived in Rhode Island most of his life before moving to Maine. He worked as a farm hand for area farms in Rhode Island and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
Homer loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing the guitar. He taught guitar lessons and also played in a local blue-grass band in Harmony. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Calling hours at Jackman Funeral Home, 7 Mechanic St., Douglas will be Tues. Feb. 12 from 4-7 p.m. with military honors service at 7 p.m. There is no burial. In lieu of flowers, donations in Homer and Carolines memory may be made to the Homer & Caroline Memorial Garden Fund, c/o Webster First Credit Union, 282 Main St., Douglas, MA 01516.
