Ellen M. Holt (1933-2016)

SKOWHEGAN – Ellen M. Holt, 83, of Skowhegan, passed away Saturday June 11, 2016 at her home.

She was born Jan. 30, 1933, in Benton, the daughter of Harold E. Clifford and Marguerite (Stinchfield) Clifford.

Ellen graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield in the class of 1951.

On Sept. 27, 1952, she married Avard J. Holt in Canaan. He died in 1994.

She was a waitress for the Candlelight Restaurant, Lakewood at the Inn, Gene’s Restaurant and she worked for several years for SAD #54. Then she owned and operated Holt Hair and Skin Care until her retirement in 2006.

She was a life time member of the Order of the Eastern Star serving locally and statewide, she was a member of the Show Stopper tap dancing group. Ellen enjoyed cooking; watching local basketball, crocheting afghans and she loved knitting mittens for her family and friends.

Ellen enjoyed spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her five children, Tom Holt and his wife Debi of Farmington, Sally Knight and her husband Nolan of Skowhegan, Tim Holt of Skowhegan, Susan Smith and her husband Clarke of Marblehead, MA, Terry Holt of Lowell, MA; her daughter –in-law Darlene Holt of Norridgewock; three brothers, Harolyn Clifford and his wife Marge of Waterville, Roger Clifford of Benton, Alan Clifford and his wife Goldie of Canaan; ten grandchildren, Kim, David, Trevor, Beth, Eric, Becky, Casey, Derek, Kara and Tyler; many great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her mom and dad, her husband, two brothers George and John Clifford, and a sister Marion Liberty.

Viewing Hours will be held on Thursday June 16, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, with a funeral service to follow at the funeral home at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Marcia Charles officiating.
