AUBURN – Gertrude J. O’Brien, 97, of Rangeley, died early Tuesday evening, Nov. 29, 2016, at Bolster Hieghts Nursing Home.

She was born in Lake Stevens, Washington, a daughter of Thurey and Elizabeth (Anderson) Johansson. Mrs. O’Brien attended Hofstra University for two years and was married to Gerald B. Richards who passed at a young age. She later married Clarence J. O’Brien and owned and operated the Rangeley Region Sport Shop for many years.

She enjoyed playing bridge, but her true love was the outdoors and fishing. She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd.

She is survived by a son, Gregory Richards and his wife, Gisele, of Barre, Vermont; a granddaughter, Lisa Byers and her husband, Charles; great grandchildren, Charles and Lily Byers of Winslow and Falyn Sicard of Barre, Vermont.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016 at 11 a.m. from the Church of the Good Shepherd, Main Street, Rangeley. Following services, refreshments will be served in the Church Undercroft, hosted by the Episcopal Church Women. Winter entombment is at the Wiles Remembrance Center in Farmington with interment in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Rangeley.

The family suggests that those who desire consider memorial gifts in Mrs. O’Brien’s memory to the Rangeley Historical Society, 2472 Main Street, Rangeley, ME 04970. Funeral services are being cared for and provided by the Wiles Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington.
