SMITHFIELD – James A. Marden, 78, passed away July 19, 2014, at Inland Hospital in Waterville surrounded by his family.

He was born on May 16, 1936 in Waterville, the son of Arnold G. and Onia (LaFlamme) Marden.

James graduated from Waterville High School, several military schools, AAA & GM, USARPAC Signal School, and Nike University. He was a veteran in the U.S. Army who proudly served his country from 1954 to 1961 when he was honorably discharged. On August 29, 1964, he married Doris Deschaine at Notre Dame Church in Waterville. He worked for many years as a contractor for several companies.

James was an active member of the American Legion Post 51 and life member of VFW Waterville Post 1285. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, and was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He cherished time spent loving and teasing his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Doris M. (Deschaine) Marden of Smithfield; 2 sons, James A. Marden II and wife Kristi of Smithfield, Jason A. Marden; daughter, Jodi A. Ellis and husband Michael of Oakland; 4 granddaughters, Jillian A. Constable and husband Cory of Augusta, Jessica M. Ellis and partner Michael P. Woodman of Waterville, Rachel Berryment and partner Hank Frederick of Skowhegan, Kandice Edmund of Norway; 6 grandsons, Pfc.James A. Marden III of Fairbanks, Alaska, Pfc. Matthew J. Ellis of Fort Carson, Colorado, Alan J. Marden of Clinton, Hunter N. Marden of Smithfield, Andrew C. Ellis of Oakland, Michael A. Ellis II of Waterville; 2 great grandsons, Conner Constable of Augusta, and Wyatt Frederick of Skowhegan; sister, Joan Lefebvre of Rhode Island; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey A. Marden and a sister, Marlene Lagrange.

A graveside service will be held Monday, July 28, 2014 at 10:00 am at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
