Jean E. Phelps (1931-2015)

FARMINGTON – Jean E. Phelps, 83, of Industry, died peacefully on Thursday, April 16, 2015, surrounded by her loving family at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

Jean was born on Oct. 17, 1931, a daughter of Elmer and Pauline (Whittimore) McGray. She grew up in Oxford with her siblings and received her education at the Emma Jean Stapleton Schoolhouse.

Jean, also known as Mabel, was a collector of many things, most notably her coin and stamp collection. She had an artistic hand, crafting beaded necklaces which she often gifted to family and friends. Jean especially enjoyed going for walks, playing on her tablet, watching western movies, and was a huge Elvis fan. She was an animal lover with an enormous heart, always opening her home to others.

Jean is survived by her children, Vicki Nutting and her wife, Dorene, of Industry; Michael Phelps and his wife, Teresa of Lewiston; Ron Hill of Lewiston, Danny Phelps and his wife Debbie Leighton of Lewiston; Tina Williams of Bath, Paula Woodberry of Lincoln and daughter-in-law Nadine Phelps of Lewiston; a sister, Terry Wakefield and her husband Keith of Oxford; brothers, Ernie McGray and his wife, Juanita of Oxford and Billy McDonald and his wife, Sue of Lewiston; 17 grandchildren including grandsons, Thomas Phelps and Daniel Bailey; 19 great grandchildren; special caregiver and friend, Raya Saucier, and friend Hilda Thompson.

She was predeceased by her late husband, Leroy Phelps Jr. and a sister, Marilyn Berry. Tributes and condolences may be shared by visiting www.wilesrc.com.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial visitation from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Wiles Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington, ME 04938. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jean can be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, Maine Chapter, 477 Congress St., Suite M1, Portland, ME 04101, in honor of her grandson, Mathew Demass.
