FARMINGTON — Jean M. Bergquist, 83, of Jay, died peacefully on July 20, 2016 at Edgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center.

Jean was born on Christmas day in 1932, a daughter of Donald M. and Marion K. (Gifford) Smith. She grew up in New London, Conn., where she graduated from Williams Memorial Institute. She later joined the United States Army in Fort Lee, Virginia, where she played clarinet in the WAC band. During her military service, Jean played in several concerts, including at the White House for the president.

Jean worked in administration for several companies including Milton Bradley, School of Nursing (in Florida), and the Greater Miami Jewish Federation of America. Jean made her home in Florida for 41 years with her friend, Anita Reed before moving to Maine 14 years ago.

Jean enjoyed puzzles, playing word find games, and playing Phase 10. She especially enjoyed spending time with her good friends and neighbors, Yvonne and Mike Hebert; particularly when it involved going out for seafood, hot fudge Sundays, and pizza on Friday nights.

Jean will be missed and remembered for her quick-wit and great sense of humor.

She is survived by her brothers, Gifford Smith and his longtime companion, Florence Paine of Florida, and Donald “Bud” Smith and his wife, Mary of Texas; a niece, Denise Smith; and special friends, Yvonne and Michael Hebert of Jay.

She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Janet K. Gustafson, and special friend, Anita Reed. Tributes and condolences may be shared by visiting www.wilesrc.com.

Interment will be private at the East Wilton Cemetery. Cremation arrangements are in the care of Wiles Remembrance Center, 308 Franklin Rd., Jay, ME 04239.
