FARMINGTON – Jean Swain Grant, 84, of Rangeley, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday May 29, 2011 at Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center in Farmington.
She was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Rangeley, the first child of Stephen S. and Bessie (Haley) Swain.
On Sept. 14, 1947, she married Edward Grant in Rangeley and lived there all her life. She was a member of the Rangeley Free Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher, a member of the Church Missionary Society, and was on the Deaconess Board.
Jean worked as a telephone operator for the New England Telephone Co. in Rangeley. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the WWI Barracks. For many years, she ran the Sam-O-Set Housekeeping Camps on Rangeley Lake and enjoyed the many people who came there to vacation. Jean was a volunteer driver for many who needed a ride for an appointment or to grocery shop. Jean will always be remembered as a giving person and enjoyed helping whenever she was able. She was always knitting or quilting, having made quilts for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as knitting many items each year for the Veterans Home at Togus. She enjoyed her grandchildren and was an active participant in their many school and social activities and looked forward to their visits.
Jean is survived by her sons: James E. and his wife, Susan of Industry and Stephen H. and his wife, Valerie of Rangeley; her grandchildren: Christopher Farmer and his wife, Jennifer of Rangeley, Jonathan Farmer of Farmington, David Grant and his wife, Moriah of Hope, Me.; Stephen C. and his wife, Kim of Rangeley and Kelly O’Neil and her husband, Patrick of Rangeley and her great-grandchildren: Jacob and Lauren Farmer, Jazmyn Begin, Nathan Farmer, Dylan and Carter Grant, Emma Jean and Abby Grant and Emily O’Neil; her sister, Geraldine Wilkinson of Manchester, NH; her brother, Stephen M. Swain and his wife, Jackie of Rangeley ; a sister-in-law, Rowena Swain of Auburn; a sister-in-law, Louise Doak of Rangeley; a brother-in-law George Grant of Huntsville, AL as well as her many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Edward “Ebbie” Grant and her brother, Harold Swain.
Her family would also like to thank the staff at Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center for their care and concern shown while a resident there.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation at the Rangeley Free Baptist Church on Tuesday evening from 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held at the church Wednesday afternoon, June 1 at 1 PM. Interment at Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley. Following services, the Women’s Fellowship will host a reception in the church vestry. All are welcome. Remembrance gifts may be given in Jean’s honor to either the Mission Fund at the Rangeley Free Baptist Church or to the Rangeley Fire Department.
