PORTLAND – Jeanette (Ranger) Smith, 83, has gone home to be with the Lord on Monday Sept. 29, 2014, from Seaside Health Care, after a period of failing health.

Jeanette was born in Portland, on Jan. 24, 1931, the daughter of Alva M. Ranger and Elizabeth (Banks) Ranger. She married Delmont A. Smith and raised six children. She was educated in Portland and Farmington. school systems and furthered her education in psychology at Berkshire Community College.

She worked at Farmington Shoe Shop in Farmington, Berkshire Head Start Program in Adams, Mass. and served many people during her volunteer work with AA in Pittsfield, Mass., Rider’s Program in Rumford, Foster Grandparent Program at Lincoln Middle School in Portland and many food pantries.

She enjoyed dancing as well as many outdoor activities such as gardening, hiking and training horses. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

She was predeceased by both parents, brother Alva Ranger, Jr., sister Barbara Chase, grandsons Steve Gonzales and Justin Vallieres, granddaughter, Shannon McLean, and niece Carol Chase.

Jeanette is survived by 3 daughters, Linda J. Ford of Phillips, Debra A. Hearl and her husband Jeff of Graceville, Fla., April L. Savard and her husband Bob of St. Albans, Vt., three sons, Glenwood G. Smith of Pittsfield, Mass., David A. Smith of Strong, Kevin L. Smith and wife Mary of Swanton, Vt., two brothers, Norman Ranger and wife Beverly of Buxton, Duane Brown and wife Karen of South Portland, and one sister, Donna Belcher of Bridgewater, Mass., 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
