John was born May 30, 1947, the son of Julian and Estella (Nelson) Thompson. Upon his high school graduation, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Ricker College. After college, he went on to serve his country in the United States Army and later, the National Guard. John, better known as “Jack” later earned his master’s degree in special education from the University of Maine.

He went on to have two sons, Kristopher and Jason from a first marriage. On Feb. 24, 1990, he married Victoria Tatum in Norridgewock.

Jack spent his career working as a teacher at both the middle school and high school levels. Throughout his career, he worked at Carrabec Elementary School, Carrabec High School, Lawrence Middle School, Forest Hills School, the Rangeley Lakes Regional School, and eventually retired from the Elan School in Poland. He was a teacher for over 30 years.

Jack was an outdoor enthusiast; he enjoyed everything the Maine outdoors had to offer him including fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, and boating. The Rangeley region and the family camp there were the setting for many of these activities and the place he longed to be. Eventually, Jack and Victoria moved here and made camp their permanent home.

As a young man, Jack grew up with golden retrievers, and always had at least one, if not two, in the family. He was a very knowledgeable man, always keeping tabs on current events, especially on the political front, and was also a history buff. Jack was a proud member of the NRA and a collector of vintage and antique firearms.

He will be remembered for his quiet and kind nature and will be missed greatly by his family and friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Victoria Thompson of Sandy River Plantation; children, Kristopher Thompson and his wife Elizabeth of Rangeley, Jason Thompson and his wife, Viki of California; step-children, Jacqueline Fanning and her husband Thomas of North Waterford, James Johnston and his wife, Evelyn of Sebago, and Joseph Johnston and his wife Alexandra of Waterboro; grandchildren, Brayden Thompson, Kaleb Thompson, Skyler Thompson, Tavi Thompson; Nicholas Bolduc, Matthew Bolduc, Ryan Bolduc, Andrea Johnston, Benjamin Johnston, Emily Johnston, Patrick Johnston, and Daniel Johnston; a sister, Judith Chandler of Bangor; two nieces, Julie Chandler of North Yarmouth and Amy Chandler of Bangor; and several grand nephews and a grand niece and the mother of Kristopher and Jason, Brenda Morneau.
