FARMINGTON – Joyce E. Barnaby, 82, a resident of Jay, passed away peacefully at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013.

Joyce was born April 8, 1930 to Claude and Della (Dudley) Whittemore of Crown Point, New York. She also received her education in the Crown Point school system. On July 24, 1948, she married the love of her life, Gilbert J. Barnaby, Sr. in Ticonderoga, NY. In 1965, they moved to Jay, Maine, where they raised their three children and shared their love of the outdoors with them. Joyce was a communicant of the St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post 3335 in Jay, and she was also a member of the Super Seniors bowling league for many years.

We will always remember her joy of cooking, along with her self-taught seamstress skills, but most of all, her kindness. Gatherings of family and friends meant a great deal to her. She loved the outdoors; she loved fishing, camping, hunting, archery, snowmobiling, dancing, bingo, and bowling. Joyce and Gilbert thoroughly enjoyed their log cabin on Chain of Ponds for many years.

Joyce was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Although Joyce will be missed, she will remain in our hearts forever.

She is survived by her husband of 64 1/2 years, Gilbert J. Barnaby, Sr. of Jay; Maine; three children, Regina Voter, her partner Tom Savage, and her children Ryan and Rena of Farmington, Maine; Gilbert Barnaby, Jr. of Augusta, Maine, his partner Jane B. Adams, and his children Brian Barnaby and Jennifer Sanborn; and LaRena Nickerson of Moosehead Junction, Maine. Joyce is, also survived by 3 great grandchildren; Emmalee and Carlee Sanborn and Britton Barnaby, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in death by her parents, Claude and Della Whittemore, son-in-law, Winston Nickerson, Jr. her sisters Francis Christian, Marion Lee, and Helen DuShane; and brothers Donald Whittemore, Charles Whittemore and Sherman Whittemore. She will be greatly missed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9 at St. Rose of Lima Church, 1 Church Street, Jay, Maine. Visiting hours 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8th at Finley Funeral Home, 15 Church Street, Livermore Falls, Maine. VFW Ladies Auxiliary will meet at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, 445 Park Street, Livermore Falls, Maine.

  2. To the Barnaby Family – Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We have lost a beautiful person and it has been our privilege to have known her. We sure have had some good times camping and singing at Natanis Point. We loved you Joyce and may you rest in peace. Love Don and Lorraine
