AUGUSTA – Joyce S. (Stevens) Ladd, 76, passed away March 28, 2015 at the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation, surrounded by family.

She was born February 14, 1939 in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Leland G. Stevens and Marcia (Carl) Stevens Alexander.

She attended school in Mt. Vernon and graduated from Farmington High School in 1957. On July 10, 1959 she married Richard L. Ladd in Belgrade. She was responsible for starting the hot lunch program at the Mt. Vernon Elementary School and worked for 25 years at the Mt. Vernon General Store. Joyce loved to bake and was called “Cookie Jo” by everyone who knew her, crochet, knit, and sew and shared those gifts with family and friends.

Joyce is survived by 2 daughters, Jaylyn (Ladd) Trask and husband Mike of Readfield, Jayne Varney and husband Darrel of Belgrade; son, Harold “Hal” Ladd and wife Janet of Mt. Vernon; sister Rachael and husband Rick Damren of Belgrade. grandchildren, Marcia Coburn of South China, Richard Ladd of Monmouth, Richelle Ladd of Mt. Vernon, and Ashley Ladd of Mt. Vernon; great grandchildren, Khloe Baker, Emelia Ladd, and Kaitlyn Rodgers; special cousin by marriage and thought of as a sister, Valerie Kisela and family of Avon Park, Florida; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard L. Ladd and brother, Douglas H. Stevens.

The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Amy Madden, Belgrade Health Center, Mt. Vernon Rescue, Augusta Rehabilitation (especially Jillian and Karen, CNA’s), Beacon Hospice (especially Jane) and all the many people that went above and beyond their kindness to help our mother.

A graveside service will be held June 20, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Steven’s Cemetery, North Road, Mt. Vernon, ME. A celebration of Joyce’s life and a chance to share stories and memories will follow at the community center in Mt. Vernon.

  1. Jaylyn, my heartfelt condolences to you and all of your family. Your Mom was a very sweet person as I remember her from high school days.
