Judith Y. Gamage (1949-2014)

SKOWHEGAN – Judith Y. Gamage, 64, passed gently and peacefully into heaven on April 11, 2014.

She was born on Dec.  24, 1949, in Skowhegan, the daughter of Dean and Elvena (Dudley) Yeaton.

She graduated from Madison High School in 1968, then continued her education and graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 1972. She had a long and satisfying career in the field of education as a teacher at the Margaret Chase Smith School from 1972 until her retirement in 2002. She also taught high school French at Corbin Academy for 2 years after retirement and had been a substitute teacher in SAD 54 since 2010.

Over the years, Judy participated in many civic and community activities. She enjoyed working in the theater and was an active participant in the Cornville Players in the productions of The Boyfriend 1975, Once upon a Mattress 1976, L’il Abner 1977, Of Thee I Sing Vaudeville Show, Lovers and Other Strangers 1980, and The Carpenter’s Son (Skowhegan Community Chorus).

She was a part of the Augusta Symphony Orchestra from 1997 to 1999 and served as a member of the Renovation Committee at the Skowhegan Free Public Library, fund raising for new renovations. Judy also planned and produced (with much help) the very popular “Evening with the Stars” dance show held at the Skowhegan Opera House for 2 years, 2008 and 2009, raising thousands of dollars for the library renovation project.

She is survived by her true sisters of the heart who loved and valued the extraordinary spirit that she was include Robin Yeaton, Darla Pickett, MJ Benner, Melissa Gaspar, and Pam Christensen.

She is also survived by her brother, Thomas D. Yeaton and wife Robin of Newport; nieces, Kristy Jo Yeaton of Portland, Shelly Spear Joyce and husband Kevin, all of Farmington; Katie Blodgett Smith and husband Brent of New Portland; Sheryl Spear of Farmington; Kristen Wallace Therriault and husband Kevin of St. Albans.

Judy cherished the many special visits with nieces Kristy Jo, Shelly and Katie along with grand nephew, Jackson Patrick Joyce and grand nieces, Cassidy Ann Smith and Kamryn Patricia Joyce.

She was predeceased by brother, Benedict Joseph Yeaton and mother, Elvena D. Yeaton.

Judy will remain close in the hearts and memories of her many very thoughtful, loving, and trusted friends Mary, Anna, Nancy, Sheila, Vera, Joan, Pat, Betty, Becky, Carol, Sue, Bobbi, Alice, Robin, Diane, Kate, Beverly, Margaret, Sue, Patti, Aunt Evie, and Aunt Lucile. She will especially be missed by a very devoted and very special friend, Bob Thing. Those of us who knew and loved Judy will lovingly think of her experiencing new adventures of spirit over Italy, France, and England.

At Judy’s request, there will be no visitation hours or funeral service. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations in Judy’s memory to the Skowhegan Public Library (Renovation Fund), 9 Elm Street, Skowhegan, Maine 04976.

  1. My condolences to the entire family. I had Mrs. Gamage as a fifth grader and she was a great teacher. May more of her students offer their condolences to her family. Learning was fun with her and I will fondly remember her as a strong and wonderful teacher
