SCARBOROUGH – The Rev. Dr. Anne Hunter died Dec. 8, 2013 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a three year struggle with cancer.

She was the daughter of Gould & Mary Louise (Keiran) Hunter. She was born in Annapolis, MD on April 6, 1943. She graduated from Brown University in 1964 and received her medical degree at SUNY/Stony Brook in 1974. She did her family practice residency at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Anne was committed to rural and small town medicine and opened an office in Kingfield. She later moved her practice to Rangeley where she served as that town’s only physician and medical examiner for many years.

Anne joined the staff of Maine Center for Cancer Medicine in Scarborough following her interest in end of life medicine and hospice care. She was one of the founders of the Maine Hospice Council, Hospice of Southern Maine and was a major donor in the establishment of the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. She was medical director, teacher and mentor for many hospice and healthcare agencies, and was instrumental in developing the Palliative Care service at Maine Medical.

After her retirement Anne was ordained a deacon 2006 in the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Maine. She served at Buck Mountain Church in Earlysville, VA, The Church of the Good Shepherd in Rangeley and at St. Nicholas Church in Scarborough. She also served as hospice chaplain in Maine and in Virginia.

Anne was a world traveler and a musician. She played Oboe in community bands in Portland and Virginia. She acted and sang in community theater and chorus in Rangeley. She was an unrepentant Red Sox fan and attended many games in Boston. She loved golf and poodles.

She is survived by her brother Richard Gould Hunter of LaConner, WA, her nieces Joan E. Hunter of LaConner and Kimberly Hunter Deck (Jeff) of Portland, OR, and her nephew James Gould Hunter, USN, of San Deigo, CA.
