JAY – Chief Larry G. White, Sr., 61, of Jay, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5 at his home surrounded by his loving family. It was the end of his battle with pancreatic cancer which began when he was diagnosed in January.

Larry was born on Nov. 19, 1952, in Lewiston, a son of Ernest White and Ruth (Dutille) White.

He graduated from Lewiston High School, and received further education in criminal justice at the University of Maine, Lewiston. He was married to his high school sweet-heart, Janice Cote on Oct. 30, 1971.

Larry was very proud of his career in law enforcement. He spent time working dispatch, in the jail and on patrol for local departments including Lewiston PD, Androscoggin SO, Sabattus PD, and Livermore Falls PD before finally settling into Jay in 1987. In Jay, he has served as patrolman, detective, D.A.R.E. officer, sergeant, police chief, and director of public safety (fire chief).

In his spare time, Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trips to the coast with his wife. His most cherished times were those spent with his children and grandchildren.

Larry is survived by his wife, Janice of Jay; two children: Becky Mills and her husband, Travis of Livermore Falls and Larry White, Jr. of Jay; two brothers: Dale White and his wife, Michelle of Lewiston and George Gagnon of Auburn; five grandchildren: Leah Pottle and her husband, Mike, Tyler Mills, Amber White, Riley Mills and Troy Haines.

He was predeceased by his parents.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Wiles Remembrance Center, 308 Franklin Rd. (Rte. 133) Jay, on Saturday, Oct. 11 , to a memorial visitation from 2-7 p.m. A Public Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. from the Spruce Mountain High School Gymnasium, RSU 73 Rte. 4, Jay. Following services, a reception will be held in the school cafeteria.

Remembrance gifts may be given in his memory to the Chief Larry White Memorial Scholarship Fund (for the purposes of encouraging a student studying law enforcement), c/o RSU 73, 9 Cedar St., Livermore Falls, ME 04254. Private family committal services will be held on Monday at St. Peter’s and Paul Cemetery, Lewiston.

  1. You fought it until the end and now you are in a better place with no more pain. We all appreciate your years of dedication to law enforcement and your community. Condolences to the family on the loss.
