MT VERNON – Lewis “Lew” E. Flewelling, 90, of Mt. Vernon, passed away on May 1, 2016 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta.

He was born on Feb. 10, 1926, in Cornville, to parents Otto and Evelyn (Smith) Flewelling. He attended Cornville Elementary School and graduated from Skowhegan High School class of 1944.

Shortly after graduation he left for basic training at Fort Dix. He served in the 124th Armored Division as a staff sargent. He received his Purple Heart for being wounded in Wurzburg, Germany April 1, 1945.

He returned home in June 1946 and married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Thomas, on July 21, 1946 at Ruth’s parent’s home. They resided in Skowhegan where he worked for Hunt’s Dairy delivering milk, until moving to Mt. Vernon in 1964 where they owned Lew’s Country Store. After selling the store in 1979, Lewis worked at Hussey Hardware in Augusta.

In his retirement years he and Ruth enjoyed many winters in Ladylake, Florida. He also enjoyed camping and spending time at Kingsbury Pond. But one of his greatest joys was spending time with his family and helping other people.

Lewis was recognized for being a 50 year member of the Masons and a member of Grange for 75 years. He was a member of VFW and American Legion.

Lewis is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruth of Mt. Vernon;, sister Thelma Pooler of Skowhegan; son William and his wife Pat Flewelling of Leeds; daughter Millie and her husband Waine Whitter of Vienna; daughter Lisa Crowell and partner Bill Elliott of Wayne; and son Jeffrey and his wife Nancy Flewelling of Augusta; eight granddaughters: Lidie Whittier Robbins and husband Josh, Addie Whittier Michaud and husband Alfie, Shannon Crowell Cote and husband Jason, Kate Flewelling, Anna Flewelling Watson and husband Tony, Krystle Flewelling Blaisdell and husband RJ, Mikaela Flewelling, and Julie Crowell Anderson and husband Chris and 10 great grandchildren: Brynne Robbins, Saige,Leah and Faith Michaud, Ayla and Callen Cote, Alexandra, Angus and Gwendolyn Watson, and Harper and Will Anderson.

Lewis was predeceased by his parents, brother-in-law Willis Pooler and son-in-law Wayne Crowell.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Maine Veterans’ Home for their wonderful care of Lewis these past seven months and to Rev. and Mrs. Jay Wilson for their many visits.

A service will be held on Wednesday May 4, at 1 p.m. from the First Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. Public Memorial Masonic services will be provided by the Vernon Valley No. 68 Masonic Lodge. Committal services with full military honors provided by Camp Keyes will be held at the Mt. Vernon Community Cemetery, (North Road). A reception will follow the graveside service at the Community Center in Mt. Vernon. All are welcome.

Remembrance gifts may be given to the Food Bank, First Baptist Church , 321 Pond Road, Mt. Vernon, ME 04352. Tributes and condolences may be shared on his memorial wall at www.wilesrc.com.   2. Our milkman when we owned the store in NS in 1960. Lewis was a super guy always with a smile.
