AUBURN – Philip Roland Shurtleff Sr., 52, of Carrabassett Valley, passed away on Dec. 12, 2014, at the Hospice House surrounded by his family after a second battle with cancer.

Philip was born on March 12, 1962 in Farmington, the son of Richard and Eunice (Voter) Shurtleff.  He grew up in Strong and graduated from Mt. Abram High School in the Class of 1980. During his childhood, he was active in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and served as an altar boy for the Strong Methodist Church.

Philip married Patricia “Trisha” Harrison on Aug. 17, 1991 in Farmington. The family moved to Carrabassett Valley in 1992 where they raised their three children. Philip worked as a carpenter most of his life and was self-employed for the last 25 years. He was known for his finish work and cabinet making.

Philip enjoyed hunting, fishing, music, wood carving and spending time at the family’s camps. He had a great knowledge of the outdoors and was a member of the Big Buck Club. He was an active Carrabassett Valley fire fighter and registered national first responder for many years and remained an active fire fighter until his illness no longer allowed him.

Philip will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and putting a smile on everyone’s face.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Patricia Shurtleff; his two sons, Philip Shurtleff, Jr. and Michael Shurtleff; his daughter, Ashley Shurtleff, all of Carrabassett Valley; his mother, Eunice Shurtleff of Strong; his two brothers, Ricky Shurtleff of Strong, Daniel Shurtleff and wife Darcey of New Sharon; his sister, Dianne Henderson of Kingfield; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father, Richard Shurtleff.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014 beginning at 4 p.m. at the Avon Town Hall, 1116 Rangeley Rd., Avon. A graveside service will be held in the spring of 2015 at the Village Cemetery in Strong with date and time to be announced.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dan & Scott’s Cremation & Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington, ME 04938.

  3. My son was a joyful part of my life, with a sense of humor like no other. He was a loving and dedicated son, brother, husband and father. He knew the species of birds simply by listening to the sounds they made. He also knew the habits and habitats of all types of wildlife. He was a true lover of nature. I will miss my boy forever, and I have wonderful memories to cherish. I love you Phil. Mom

  7. Shurtleff Family, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I last saw Phil in the fall of 2013 over back while he was working on the new camp. Have so many great memories hunting over back at the ole Dickey Place with the Voter/Shurtleff gang back in the 70’s & 80’s. We sure had some great guys to look up to over the years! Phil will live on in your hearts! God Bless you all.

  8. Unie, I am so very sorry to hear about Phillip and believe me I know what you are going through right now and the hurt and the tears still will come. He is no longer in pain and is with his dad and it sounds like he was a lot like his uncle Mally. My heart goes out to you and all the family. Love, Fern

  14. Trisha I have no words to say to sooth your heart. I know that Phil is with out pain now and is smiling down at all of us. He will be dearly miss by all that have crossed his path of life. My condolences go out to the whole family and I will see you on the 19th.Rest in Peace my Friend. I will see you at my journeys end.

  15. I have so many great memories of my Uncle. He truly was one of a kind. He was funny, inquisitive, open-minded, an avid nature lover, witty, a great husband and father, intelligent, creative and artful with wood, and a great singer. He will be missed. To his wife and kids who feel his constant absence in their home, I send love and prayers. He will never be absent from your hearts.
