PORTLAND – Phyllis Ada (Nichols) Atwood passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
She was born in Kingfield, October 30, 1925, one of 12 children born of Ada May (Durrell) and Orrin P. Nichols. She married Roland B. Atwood on April 20, 1946, and they were parents of two sons, Hayden E. and Roland E. She lived most of her life in Kingfield and worked at Kingfield Wood products for many years.
She and Roland also worked at Judson’s Sugarloaf Motel in Carrabassett in the late ‘50s, just as that area began to develop as a tourist destination. In 2005 Phyllis moved to Northfield Green in Portland and made many new friends there. She most recently was a resident at St. Joseph’s Manor, also in Portland, where she was cared for by a dedicated and supportive staff.
She is survived by her sons, Hayden and his wife Anne of Portland; Roland and his wife Bridget of Ulen, MN; her sister Nadine Nichols of Kingfield; and her beloved grandchildren Stephen, Michael, Guy, William (Bill), Daniel, Leah, and a step-grandson Nicholas May, as well as many close and special cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Roland, as well as her parents and brothers Clinton C. (Bill) Nichols, Hayden R. Nichols and Harry R. Nichols (who died at birth), and sisters Wilma Essency, Pearl McCleary, Shirley Holbrook, Elgie Nichols, Hilda Durrell, Erma Whitney, and Jacqueline Goff.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to either the Residents’ Fund, St. Joseph’s Manor, 1133 Washington Ave., Portland, ME 04103; or to the First Lutheran General Fund, First Lutheran Church, 132 Auburn St., Portland, ME 04103. There will be no visiting hours; a graveside service will be held Saturday, August 6, at 1 p.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery in Kingfield.
