BELFAST – Robert E. Whidden, 80, of Belfast, passed away at Waldo County General Hospital on Sunday, Nov. 23, following a brief illness.

He was born on Feb. 18, 1934, in Dorchester, Mass., a son of William E. and Clara (Gabriel) Whidden.

When in high school, he moved with his parents to Belfast, Maine where he graduated from Crosby High School. Soon after graduation, he entered the Air Force and was stationed in Colorado and Japan where he happily experienced Japanese culture. Upon discharge from the service, he returned to Denver, Colorado and worked for the Rio Grande, Erie Lackawanna and Union Pacific Railroads. After retirement, he eventually returned to Belfast where he enjoyed reading, bridge games, bible study, and his many neighborhood friends and his cat. For many years, he was known for his Christmas stories published in the Republican Journal.

He is survived by his sister, M. Jeanne Marshall and her husband, Edward of North Andover, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Beverly Whidden of San Diego, California; nieces Linda Kyomitmaitee and her husband, Paul of North Andover, Mass.; Carol Timberlake and her husband, Douglass of Strong and Rockland, Maine and a nephew, Verne Whidden and his wife, Kim of San Diego, California as well as 5 grand nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, William E. Whidden and a niece, Valerie J. Whidden.

Private burial at the Central Cemetery, Randolph, Mass. Remembrance gifts may be given to an animal shelter of one’s choice.   1. I am so sorry for your loss. May it help you and your family to know that soon sickness will be a thing of the past because God said at Isaiah 33:24: And no resident will say: “I am sick”. Yes because of his love for you and knowing the pain that death brings to families, he will get rid of death forever, never to return so yes, soon we want worry about losing our loved ones to death because of it. May this and your memories, bring you some comfort and strength, in your days ahead, knowing that sickness and yes, death will be a thing of the past.
