Therese Jean Macdonald (1927-2014)

BELGRADE – Therese Jean Macdonald, 87, passed away on Aug. 28, 2014, at Somerset Rehab and Living Center in Bingham.

She was born on March 31, 1927, in Union City, N.J., the daughter of Harry and Catherine (Hooney) Hammond. She attended schools in Bergenfield, N.J. In May of 1949 she married Herbert E. Macdonald. They raised their three children, Carolyn, Kevin and John in Bergenfield and later Norwood, N.J. In the mid 1970s, they moved to Belgrade, Maine, where she owned and operated Old Macdonald’s Restaurant from the mid ’70s through early ’80s.

After selling her restaurant she held various volunteer positions over the years. Working for the Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Fraud as a volunteer mediator brought her the most satisfaction. She was an active member of the Union Church, was a gifted cook, baker and seamstress.

Therese was predeceased by her husband Herbert Macdonald; special companion George Stetson; daughter-in-law Wendy Macdonald.

She is survived by daughter, Carolyn Sawyer of Belgrade; two sons, Kevin Macdonald of Belgrade, and John H. Macdonald of Rome; four grandsons: James W. Sawyer and fiancée Kira Maas of N. Yarmouth, Mathew Sawyer of Belgrade, Christopher Sawyer of Belgrade, and Bert Macdonald and partner Katie Sherman of Buxton; five granddaughters: Catherine M. Sawyer and fiancée Parker Johnson of Belgrade, Jennifer Blair and husband Loren of Waterboro, Jessica Mitchell of Hollis, Erin and Heather Macdonald of Harpswell; great grandchildren: Ethan, Emily, Dillon, Elizabeth, Colin, Mia, Sarah-Kate, Samuel, Hannah, Mitchell, and Skylar; sister, Edythe Grant and husband James of Matawan, N.J.; sister-in-law Ruth Hammond of Fair Lawn, N.J.; cousins, Dorothy and Edward Urquhart of Rome; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the staff members at Somerset Rehabilitation and Living Center for their patience, kindness and outstanding care.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., Sept. 4, 2014 at the Union Church, Belgrade, Maine. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations in Therese’s memory to the Somerset Rehabilitation & Living Center, Resident Activity Fund, 43 Owens Street, Bingham ME 04920.

  1. So sorry to hear of this. I really enjoyed her while she was at Edgewood. She was a very interesting women. I loved listening to her stories. She always told them with great humor. My sincere condolences go out to you Caroline and the whole family.
