SKOWHEGAN – Wilfred Frederick Lawton, 92, died December 21, 2012 at his home of 56 years with his family by his side. He was born in Bangor, April 4, 1920, the son of Leslie and Ellen Lawton. He was orphaned in 1926 and was one of seven children and the last surviving member.

Wilfred “Skip” graduated from Hampden Academy in 1938, and joined the Army in 1941 where he served on the European front until the end of World War II. In 1950, he met and married the love of his life, Marjorie Libby. They were married on July 3, 1950 and remained married for 62 years until her passing just three months ago.

Skip and Margie moved to Skowhegan in 1956 where they raised their four children. They built a poultry farm that Margie ran while he worked for the Highway Department. In 1996, he helped develop the Oak Pond Brewing Company where he looked forward to waiting on his customers. He loved his tractors and could most often be found on one of them either mowing lawns or plowing snow.

He is survived by 3 daughters, Linda Dove and husband Greg of Mason, Ohio, Susan Anderson and husband Keith of Lebanon, Ohio, Cynthia Fox and husband John of Pittsfield; one son, Robert Lawton and wife Patricia of Gorham; 5 grandchildren, Jessica Dove of Mason, Ohio, Aidan and Emma Fox of Pittsfield, and Sophie and Trebor Lawton of Gorham.

A wake to celebrate the lives of Margie and Skip will be held Friday, January 4, 2013 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at Adams Chapel, Dan & Scott’s Cremation & Funeral Service, 445 Waterville Road, Skowhegan, Maine. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.
