Letter to the Editor: Support BPA disclosure

1 min read

LD 1181 would provide Maine families with information on which major food companies use BPA in their cans and jars. This would only apply to companies earning over $1 billion a year in sales and would not affect any Maine businesses.

This bill has all ready been passed in the Maine House and Senate with bipartisan support and now awaits the passage or veto of Governor within the next few days.

Science has shown the chemical BPA to cause cancer, learning disabilities, and reproductive health problems. I urge the continued support of Rep. Lance Harvell and ask Sen. Tom Saviello to help override the Governor’s veto if he should choose to support the large food companies verses the health of Maine families.

  1. I “was” interested in your “point” until you decided to go the route of so many who cant stick to the topic but feel the need to play politics..
Since you could not resist your urge to use this a a slam against our Gov I feel the urge to dismiss you as politically motivated more than anything else (are you sure you cant somehow blame George Dubya also?

By itself concerns for BPA are valid,,,so why dont you just let it stand on it’s own rather than tainting it with YOUR politics,,,(I know you are one of many who cant overcome their obsession,,,).

  2. really, you were listening? at what point in the above letter did the author “play politics?” aside from this being an inherently political issue, i’m assuming that you mean by “play politics” using a person’s party affiliation as an ad hominem argument against them. in this case, however, the author appeals to her representatives (both republicans) to support the legislation in question, and if need be override a veto in the very possible event that our governor (another republican,) who has vetoed more bills than any maine governor since 1977, chooses to go that route once again. where, exactly, is the offense? or are you just making a fuss because that’s all you know how or ever bother to do? the lady doth protest too much, methinks.

  3. Is the BPA from food containers sold by companies making over a billion dollars worse for you than from companies making less?

Couldn’t someone start up a little business, buy the discounted cans made with BPA that the large companies no longer use, and sell their contaminated products, even tout them as Made in Maine, and GMO free and get away with it?

Anyone else see problems with this law, regardless of whether you think BPA is harmful?
