Letter to the Editor: Asking for your vote

2 mins read

I grew up in Chesterville with five brothers. We were very poor, living in a small two-room house without any utilities. I am a conservative democrat who understands the needs of struggling families, while being tight-fisted with your tax dollars. I am a vote for: transparent government, expanding Medicare to cover 77,000 people and capture federal monies, local control, restoring revenue sharing, the state paying 55 percent of public education as mandated by voters in 2004, allowing municipalities to opt out of personnel property taxes, with a goal of controlling property taxes.

We must balance controlling costs while investing in the future of our state. Our future lies in our hands. We must think outside the box to create new opportunities.

Technologies are available to reduce heating and electrical costs, but are out of the reach for most small communities. Our communities need help creating these opportunities. We can create revenue by utilizing Maine’s infrastructure. Explore Peter Vigue’s plan: (google) Why Not Maine. Upgrading these systems will create new job opportunities and long-term sustainability. Every adult employee deserves to earn a living wage. I think we need to create a two-tier wage system where your small businesses pay an entry-level wage and large businesses pay a living wage. We will not solve the welfare problem until we solve the wage problem.

I am asking for your vote on Nov. 4 for State Representative for District 114.

Guy A. Iverson for State Representative
Chesterville

  1. ” I think we need to create a two-tier wage system where your small businesses pay an entry-level wage and large businesses pay a living wage.”
To quote Homer Simpson, “For once in my life I’m confused”!
I guess Mr. Iverson must want the talented and ambitious to work only for big business? And I thought Democrats were for the little guy.

  2. I first met Guy Iverson after he was elected as selectman for Chesterville. Since then I have gotten to know Guy on a one to one basis and as a fellow selectman. What really impressed me about Guy is the fact that he listens to people and considers their thoughts and ideas and he is very open minded. He ran for selectman because he wanted to help his community. I think that Guy Iverson will put his best effort into representing District 114 and the state of Maine as a whole.

  3. “We will not solve the welfare problem until we solve the wage problem.” Agreed!

I googled your name and find that your experience and ideas are certainly
a welcome standard for a candidate. Wishing you well!

  4. Captain, what I want is to create a live-able wage without breaking our small businesses. This would allow young job seekers to gain work experience at an entry level wage. If that small business hires an outstanding employee, they can pay that individual more to retain them, if they don’t want them to leave. When these large burger chains sell a cheese burger for a dollar it makes it very hard for your local corner store to compete. But if that burger chain paid a live-able wage, they wouldn’t cut the CEO’s pay, they would charge you more for the burger. That alone maybe enough for the customer to buy a freshly made local burger. Creating more foot traffic in the local corner store, giving them the resources to pay their employees more. It saddens me every time I visit Industry to see The Ugly Moose closed. These corner stores are more that just a store. They are a place where our children learn to trade, ride their bicycle to get a bag of chips and a soda and hang out with their friends. It gives them independence and a personal relationship with the owner. These are the simple things we have given up simply to maximize profits.
