Letter to the Editor: In opposition to LD 1340

1 min read

[Editor’s Note: LD 1340 has been withdrawn by Maine Sen. David Burns (R – Whiting).]

Some people would be more comfortable with Maine’s Religious Freedom Act (LD 1340).

According to the New Testament, Jesus Christ says nothing about GLBT or sexual orientation.

It can be very difficult, and maybe sometimes uncomfortable, to follow what Jesus Christ says is the most important law in the Bible, which is to love God and love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

No qualification. No exclusion.

  1. Correct about uncomfy surroundings.
Jesus endured and conquered all that..cause He is perfect.
    I’m not..are you?

I struggle with my human pride that wants me to defend myself when I’m labeled a hater just because I may not agree with the current political powers..but no hate here.
    The surge politically is….accept this.

But then I remember that Jesus got crucified for going against the powers that be…
So I guess being called a hater isn’t that big a deal….is it.

    I offer you..the other cheek.

  2. Christ never addressed the issue of homosexuality directly during his earthly ministry, but God does in His inspired Word, the Bible, Romans and Revelations for starters. You’ll find some pretty uncomfortable stuff in regards to homosexuality and God’s view of it in the first part of Romans. And since Christ was, is and always will be God…there you have it. Hard to argue that, unless you choose to believe that Christ was just a “good person” traveling around the countryside, doing good, healing people, performing miracles…AND claiming to be God. His claims and teachings were true…or He was a fool misleading the crowds. You can’t have it both ways.

  3. Yes JaneyD.. I agree with your comment. I read the same thing.
    I believe homosexuality is sin.
This is a hard topic to have any discussion about because of the defensiveness us humans have.
Us Christians tired of and react to being called haters and intolerant…immediately if not sooner by an angry person.
Often times for saying no more than you just did.
The defensiveness from the gay community often comes from the assumption that we’re judging them.
And often they have indeed been harshly dealt with by someone acting “on God’s behalf”…..
(A person offended is harder to be won than a strong city…).

So do we have the right to “say” anything?
    Consider this from the Bible.

When Jesus said to the religious people “he who is without sin cast the first stone” ..they left.
It was just Jesus and woman they were accusing left at the well. She was an adultress.
Jesus asked her “woman where are your accusers?”
He then said ..”neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more”.

Jesus didn’t skirt around the sin she had in her life.
But he didn’t condemn her either.
And He did also deal with the religious hypocrites.

    I’m not gay but I’m a sinner.
The Bible says “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”.
Sin is there in all of us folks.

Oh to be more like Jesus.
    He is Love and Justice.
    What a teacher He is.

    What’s your motive?
It makes all the DIFFERENCE If you decide to “say” anything.
    God Is Love.

  4. Yet Christ didn’t say, go on living in the same sinful lifestyle, because I love you and we should all just love each other. His command was pretty specific to her, and to all willing to hear.

Christ saves people FROM their sin….not so they can continue in sinful lifestyles. I don’t hate gays, but I do view their lifestyles as God does. Sadly, in the world we live in that preaches tolerance toward all, standing on Gods Word is the one thing no longer tolerated.
