Letter to the Editor: NECEC won’t repair economy

2 mins read

CMP is trying to take advantage of Mainers’ vulnerability during a global health crisis by asserting the corridor is the solution to repair Maine’s economy. This is simply not true. CMP recently hired out-of-state workers for highly specialized jobs (Irby Construction of MS, Northern Clearing of WI and Sargent Electric of PA) and the report often cited by the Maine Public Utilities Commission to evaluate the public benefit of the corridor clearly makes the case that many of these jobs are temporary and won’t be filled by Mainers. The study states, “Moreover, although the new jobs created by development and construction of the project are located in Maine, the positions are not necessarily filled by local Maine residents … migrant workers that move to Maine specifically for this project might move out of the region right after the construction work is completed.”

Real jobs that Mainers have now in the biomass industry, related forest products industry and recreational tourism would be in jeopardy if this line is approved. Additionally, renewable solar power expansion in Maine would be stifled, and so would jobs in that industry. CMP dodges the real number of jobs, sustainable jobs, that would result in this project = 38 jobs.

Mainers need to think about the long term to preserve Maine’s brand and way of life. This project would result in a net job loss, not a gain!

  1. When i started researching this project I quickly learned that local businesses like ReEnergy in Statton, Thorndike Industries in Strong and Pallet One in Livermore would all be losing jobs if the project went through. Bob Thorndike told me he got heartburn thinking about laying off employees and having multi-million dollar pieces of equipment become useless.
    While CMP lies about real job numbers, our local businesses like the 3 above would lose jobs and have real negative impacts. Get real CMP, this is a job killing project, except for some temporary, mostly out of state jobs and 38 permanent jobs. A small fraction of the jobs lost or impacted in wood products and recreational tourism.
    It will, however, be highly lucrative for the foriegn owners and stakeholders of CMP and for Hydro-Quebec.

  2. Darryl, Well since Thorndike said it, he did after all buy CAT lumber and mothball and then sell the machinery, when it comes to Bob and being worried about his bottom line, I couldn’t care less.

    And Sandi said it best, “They hired outside specialized workers.”(paraphrased), There isn’t a company in the state that doesn’t hire outside contractors, Cianbro, Bancroft, BE&K is an out of state firm last I heard they were owned by Haliburton could be anybody by now, there aren’t any car companies in Maine, so every time somebody buys a new car 80% of that cost goes out of state, and the bank that grants the loan is more than likely owned by an out of state bank who is probably part of an international conglomerate. So that whole cry and whine thing “The money is going to leave Maine…” News flash…90% of the money we spend leaves Maine…get over it. So far, based on the things I’ve read from the Antis, they haven’t made a very strong case as to why the NECEC is bad.

  3. to HB with love,
    Don’t look now but you are the one doing the crying and whining about all this.
    Your extended temper tantrum is bad for your health.
    You really should “get over that” before November.
    that’s when things get very interesting around these parts…
    CMP continues to lie thru their teeth.
    No Stinkin Corridor.
    CMP should at least try to fix their customer service problems first.
    What a bunch of crooks that company had become.
    I hope they change their name to something without the word Maine in it.
    Like Corrupt Foreign Power Company.
    Maine can manage without the likes of them around.

    Everything is Beautiful.
    In Maine.

  4. Interesting dialogue …..

    The main points:
    (1) We will lose jobs in Franklin and Somerset – how many we are not sure, but we will lose some;
    (2) think about the pure volume of wood to be removed over 2.5 years – probably 50,000 cord equivalent and even more with chips factored in;
    (3) We do NOT know how many of the 1600 jobs cmp states will be given to out-of-state companies and workers;
    (4) The HQ power is NOT clean nor do we get any of it (or a very small amount);
    (5) The money Maine gets from this is a paltry sum – insulting actually;
    (6) No EIS has ever been done so we don’t even have a real idea about environmental costs;
    (7) CMP has cheated rate payers with dumb smart meters. I don’t want this incompetent company blistering the countryside and putting up a fire hazard for 140 miles;
    (8) 38 jobs ……. wow, quite a windfall for all of the money that cmp, avangrid and iberdrola are making;
    (9) Project is a BAD idea for Maine and will be defeated in November.
