Letter to the Editor: Tired of half truths

1 min read

I am tired of the half truths and outright lies that the Republicans are spinning to try and blame the Democratic House for this ridiculous government shutdown.

Facts:
!. The Republican Senate passed a continuation bill to keep the government open until February.
2. Trump bragged on TV that he was going to shut down the government if he didn’t get funding for his wall, and said he would be proud to own the shutdown.
3. The first order of business in the Democratic House was to take the Republican continuation bill, unchanged, pass it in the House and send it back to the Senate.
4. Mitch McConnell refuses to bring this bill, that had already once passed in the Senate, up for a vote.
5. It would take two Republican Senators to vote with the Democrats to pass the bill and open the government.
6. It would take twelve Republican Senators to cross over and vote with the Democrats to override Trumps Veto.

This Trump tantrum government shutdown is wholly owned by Trump and now the Republican Senate. The Senate could open the government tomorrow if they would bring the House (Republican) bill to a vote and enough Republicans were mature enough to vote with the Democratic minority.

  1. Fact- president Obama shut the government down rather than compromise on Obamacare.
Fact – Republicans gave in and their voters were disgusted.
Fact- if Democrats would negotiate the government could open.
Fact- the border has been a problem for a long time.
Fact- both sides have used border security as a campaign issue.
Fact- president Trump promised to secure the border in his campaign.
    Fact- Donald Trump won.
Fact- president Trump has fulfilled more of his campaign promises in a shorter time than any president.
Fact- the same Democrats opposing the wall/barrier were for it prior to president Trump’s election.
Fact- it takes two sides to negotiate.
Fact- compromise is when each side gets some of what they want.
Fact- Nancy pelosi and Chuck Schumer have refused to negotiate.
The fact is, to say this is all the fault of one side is very far from factual.

  2. Our government works on compromise.Right now it is the Democrats that refuse to budge on their stance of no money at all for the wall.

  3. Just the Facts;
Fact: Social-liberal platform became the main purpose of Democratic Party since 1930s. The voters began to support Democratic Party due to the New Deal Coalition which takes over the seat in 1932 until 1964. Most of the voters were the Catholics. Fact: After 1964, Democratic Party began to attract the African Americans as their supporters. The professional women, single women, Latin Americans and Asians have been the major elements in Democratic Party after 2000s. Fact: By 1990s, Democratic Party gained more interest from West Coast and Northeast. The socially liberal voters began to leave Republican Party and supported Democratic Party. Fact: The major rival of Democratic Party is Republican Party. Democratic Party has more memberships. The conservative democrats only occupy a small portion of the House Democratic caucus. Fact: The majority of caucus is dominated by centrists and progressives. Fact: The welfare state, economic equality and social equality are included in the characteristics of modern liberalism ascribed by Democratic Party’s philosophy. Fact: There are several interventions that Democratic Party to apply in the economy such as consumer protection, labor union support and social programs.

Fact: The Republican Party was founded primarily to oppose slavery, and Republicans eventually abolished slavery. The Democratic Party fought them and tried to maintain and expand slavery. The 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery, passed in 1865 with 100% Republican support but only 23% Democrat support in congress. Fact: During the Civil War era, the “Radical Republicans” were given that name because they wanted to not only end slavery but also to endow the freed slaves with full citizenship, equality, and rights. Fact: During the Civil War era, the “Radical Republicans” were given that name because they wanted to not only end slavery but also to endow the freed slaves with full citizenship, equality, and rights. Fact: Lincoln’s Vice President, Andrew Johnson, was a strongly pro-Union (but also pro-slavery) Democrat who had been chosen by Lincoln as a compromise running mate to attract Democrats. After Lincoln was assassinated, Johnson thwarted Republican efforts in Congress to recognize the civil rights of the freed slaves, and Southern Democrats continued to thwart any such efforts for close to a century. Fact: The 14th Amendment, giving full citizenship to freed slaves, passed in 1868 with 94% Republican support and 0% Democrat support in congress. The 15th Amendment, giving freed slaves the right to vote, passed in 1870 with 100% Republican support and 0% Democrat support in congress. Fact: The Ku Klux Klan was originally and primarily an arm of the Southern Democratic Party. Its mission was to terrorize freed slaves and “ni**er-loving” (their words) Republicans who sympathized with them. Fact: In the 1950s, President Eisenhower, a Republican, integrated the US military and promoted civil rights for minorities. Eisenhower pushed through the Civil Rights Act of 1957. One of Eisenhower’s primary political opponents on civil rights prior to 1957 was none other than Lyndon Johnson, then the Democratic Senate Majority Leader. LBJ had voted the straight segregationist line until he changed his position and supported the 1957 Act. Fact: The historic Civil Rights Act of 1964 was supported by a higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats in both houses of Congress. In the House, 80 percent of the Republicans and 63 percent of the Democrats voted in favor. In the Senate, 82 percent of the Republicans and 69 percent of the Democrats voted for it. In the House, 80 percent of the Republicans and 63 percent of the Democrats voted in favor. In the Senate, 82 percent of the Republicans and 69 percent of the Democrats voted for it. Fact: Contrary to popular misconception, the parties never “switched” on racism. The Democrats just switched from overt racism to a subversive strategy of getting blacks as dependent as possible on government to secure their votes. At the same time, they began a cynical smear campaign to label anyone who opposes their devious strategy as greedy racists.

The next time someone claims that Republicans are racist and Democrats are not, don’t fall for it. They as a group are “pathological liars.” The Democratic party leaders are remarkable in that they must believe the most of the public at large is either ignorant or just believe the current BS delivered and rebroadcasts by the willing media and by those that clearly drank the kool aid. Not to mention and including Senators; Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, former Senator Hillary Clinton, for “flip-flopping” but also , Obama and Biden all supported the building of a border wall/barriers. This past support of a southern border wall seems to be conveniently forgotten apparently just to spite President Donald Trump in 2019.

  5. ¿Why won’t this factual post get published? Instead we have to read Williams’ propaganda weekly? DB?

  6. Everybody knows that should the Republicans cave, it never gets brought up again. And most of the leftist nay sayers supported MORE than $5 billion during the Obama administration for border barrier improvements and ICE and CPB holding facilities. This is nothing more than a personal attack against a duly elected official, simply because they don’t like him, and that is the ONLY reason the government remains in partial shutdown. All the leftists have to do is approve LESS money than Obama asked for to do the same thing. The way it is now it poses a threat to national security, that is an inescapable fact, maybe more do come through ports of entry, maybe they don’t, either way, it is a small crack, and the small cracks have to be fixed before they become big ones. Trump started the shut down, it’s the leftists that are keeping it going.

  7. William, apparently you failed to notice your liberal heroes voted for a wall on several occasions. It must be tough for all you left wing loons to see Trump doing so much for our country. The best you guys can come up with is a transgender bathroom. I understand how you must feel.

  8. To blame one party or another is ridiculous.. Both have faults but they are being paid to do a job and they are not! Why are they receiving paychecks during the shutdown and working people that depend on their wages must go without.. Used as pawns This isn’t suppose to be about whether Democrats or Republicans WIN.. It.s about doing what’s right for the american people! It has been about who’s right or wrong and MONEY..
JL whoever you are… Blah, Blah, Blah

  9. Trump is asking for $5.7 billion to build a border wall. The United States has an annual budget in 2019 of $4.407 trillion. In other words, Trump is asking for $57 out of an annual budget of $44,070. Schumer and Pelosi are effectively saying “No one is getting paid for work and no bills are getting paid until you give up the idea of spending $57 on protection for our country”.

Still think Trump is the unreasonable one?

  10. It wood be nice to see someone with a name comment on or “controvert” the six (6) “points” that Gilliand raises It may well be that Gilliand is all the appellations cast upon him and otherwise a closet crack pot but he sure rights well ’nuff

  11. Trump got elected largely because he convinced America’s Dumbest that Mexico will pay to build a wall to block themselves from coming here to work. “The Poorly Educated” (sound familiar?) ate the bait and clamored for more lies to swallow with their ever expanding stomachs. You haven’t been disappointed, have you? Don’t blame the Dems, blame yourselves or Mexico. Or the person the KGB refers to as Agent Orange.

  12. Glaringly absent from this discussion so far, is the Fact that the GOP has had the executive branch and Both houses of congress for the past two years and could have passed anything they wanted. SUDDENLY ”the wall” becomes an ”emergency” requiring a shut down of government??? GET REAL! It’s just more drama from the Poseur-In Chief. It’s just Another shiny object to distract from his very real problems!

  13. ”If you Say there’s an emergency, and you’re Waiting to declare it, it just might Not be an emergency,”

  14. Another Fact: There is no ‘Democratic Party’……There is a Democrat Party
    and a Republican Party…..

  15. When Nuff’s said 3 times is that Tmuch said or Morenuff said? Whichever it is I hope it gets your point across to someone, it’s way too long for me to bother with.

  16. I know that most of you believe that CBS,NBC, ABC, CNN, PBS and MSNBC ; along with the Chicago Trubune, Washington Post, Boston Globe, New Orleans Picayune, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle and Washington Examiner are all fake news, and the only truth comes from Fox and Friends and the National Enquirer.

You are entitled to your own opinions and your own slant on the facts; but the vehemence from the people that answer on this site is disturbing.

And by the way: Trump lost the election by three million votes.

    William Gilliland

  17. @zaphod…they would have needed 10 democrats to vote with them which they didn’t have.

  18. William probably denounces President Trump as “his” President. Secondly Donna, and Perspective have made excellent points. Why are people that are still working not getting paid, when on abc news yesterday they said Pelosi and Chuck and the rest of congress was going home for the weekend. Last I checked in my business and any other I’ve worked for you work through a long strestch of NO TIME OFF UNTIL WHATEVER IS BROKE IS FIXED !!!!! Verso doesn’t have a shutdown to let everyone go home they do it to keep their company going and EVERYONE WORKS to do so. Stop pointing fingers at one person and start holding everyone accountable even if liberals don’t like that word. (Accountable) I guess we could donwhat the Democrats want and just forget the problem and just give billions to countries that are doing such horrible things that their citizens need to flee in danger. Take the foreign aid and spend it more wisely.

  19. Ed W maybe you should read it instead of being rude. It is in fact full of facts so what if it got printed three times. You might just learn something.

Zaphod you really should pay more attention to what is happening, and when speaking of the President of the United States you should show the respect due to the office. People weren’t out in droves name calling during the last administration. Did you see what the President said on the news about just ignoring the problem like previous Presidents have for mornethan 30 years ?

Now we are hearing about gun control again now that the democrats are in charge again. Yet another subject people keep blaming on the wrong element of the problem guns instead of the people doing it. We have hundreds of laws pertaining to firearms more will not help if they don’t enforce the ones already written.

  20. Gilliland your right President Trump did not win by a majority of votes. Thank goodness for the the electoral college. If we didn’t have it (e. c.) the big cities like LA, NY, BOS. Chicago,…. Would be electing all presidents and vps small states rural communities would be at their mercy.
As for the news one example of their integrity I remember . An Iraqi man who had worked as a translator for the US military and his wife came to America and were detained for a period of time at the airport wow the media was all over that, so out side the airport the couple was surrounded by mikes and cameras a reporter asked the man how he liked America ,he said I love America , cut. Turned the channel to Fox same interview the next question was what he thought of president Trump he said I love Trump . Then a reporter could be heard saying oh s… In the back ground .
The media is a powerful weapon with right to use the First Amendment any way their editors see fit.

  21. Mr Gilliland, I couldn’t agree with you more… History will tell the real truth. I believe Trump will go down as the worst President the USA has ever seen regardless what anyone else thinks..

  22. First…about the triple posts (that is on the BD) I wrote my response originally on my laptop Word* program and that with the delayed posting created multiple posts. Sorry about that.
Second…another BS narrative from the Misleading left and the Hack media, is that it’s a huge amount of money. When compared to the bloated, rampant spending and in particular, past spending on border security that the Dems supported and funded before Trump its ridiculous. And relative to the total budget, more has been spent on office supplies and absurd programs within the wasteland of the budgetary gurus in the Federal government than the actual amount to build the barrier. Also, unlike wasted funding, the “Wall” initial cost will be offset with the cost savings projected from having a first line of defense and by not having the collateral costs created chasing and losing illegal invaders in our country. Thirdly…I stated irrefutable “Facts” in history not opinions as you(William) and your Truth deniers and congressional jesters keep perpetuating. And since one of their narratives includes that this Wall and homeland security is somehow racially motivated and pinned on the Republicans or supporters, I wanted to remind those deniers of the inconvenient truth teller that is history who really is misleading with untruths and the true Racists.

  23. Correct about the vehemence, lots of personal attacks. I like how Trump voters are called stupid and uneducated, rather than have a good honest debate. Use the race xard, use the class warfare card, the sexist card. How about the fact card. Fact is, the wall is a relatively inexpensive augmentation of our border security plan. The opposition is only against it because they think it’s Trump’s wall. In fact it will be America’s wall. Oh ya , let’s stick to the real facts. Trump won the election

  24. @Gilliland…one other network that tells the truth that you did not mention, OAN (One America News). It’s carried by Directv and Directv Now.

  25. NO president should shut down the government as a form a blackmail to get what they want. I was outraged at Pres. Obama when he did it, and I am outraged at Pres. Trump now that he is doing it. The ends does not justify the means!

  26. Rosie,, it honestly takes 2 sides to have a fight.
Pelosi is just as guilty as Trump.
    Let’s be fair.

  27. The other side

I recall the president telling Pelosi and Schumer he’d be happy to own the shut down

  28. Chuck yes he did say that. However when you have two sides to the story both are guilty of letting this go so long. What changed between now and when chuck and nancy was in favor of a wall when Obama suggested it ? Answer a guy they don’t like won the Presidency!!! That’s all nothing more than political B.S. !!! If they actually were willing to make this end they would be bringing proposals to the table like the President has but they haven’t. So I will go with what “The other side” said in their comment. Open your eyes and see the obstructionists at work.

  29. Awww

Neither side is really ‘guilty’ of anything yet Mr Trump is quite a bit closer of being actually guilty of something than Sen Schumer and Ms Pelosi are

Did you see Putin’s last tweet? “Stay strong Donald, you’re really winning this one!”
