Letter to the Editor: You get the government you deserve

1 min read

Yesterday the Republicans proposed a spending bill to continue funding the government; but, hidden among the 1,600 pages was a giveaway to the mega-banks, basically rebooting the system back to what it was before the financial collapse.

This inclusion would once again guarantee government bailout for risky, speculative loans and would remove any risk the banks might take to further maximize their profit.

How do working people benefit from this?

  1. There are many faults in this bill. The “giveaway” may be among the least of them. The most egregious fault is its name. It’s not a spending bill, it’s a borrowing bill, and it condemns our children and grandchildren to a longer stretch of indentured servitude to pay it back.

Second, it’s $1.1 TRILLION and the increase over the last CR comes from printing new money not backed by anything – same as borrowing. See above. Other problems …

It gives to Syrian rebels arms that will be used against Americans when (not if) the president puts boots on the ground.

It keeps welfare spending at record high levels.

It funds the unconstitutional executive amnesty.

Its nearly 1800 pages were written by lobbyists and cronies, with no hearings by elected officials.

Working people will see no benefit from this monstrosity, just as they have seen none from the recent umpteen continuing resolutions.

  2. If Mr. Gilliland is right this ” compromise” was bad public policy.
I’m not sure exactly what the law change does.
It is my understanding that similar changes were supported by the Democrats and Republicans in previous Legislation proposed in the fall.
Most often less regulation is good, perhaps this may not be the case.
Time will tell, additional facts would be helpful.

  3. Funny…I see the Town doing this same thing with regularity every time the Board of Selectmen meets. Extra paid days off not negotiated for and so on. That gets voted on, by five people, just like they do in Congress…giveaways from the hard-working people who get no paid days off, pensions or raises, to those who have it pretty good, by all standards.

How do working towns-people benefit from this?

Perhaps we’d be well served to watch what’s happening right in our town rather than focusing so much on the Federal level?
