The class will be held on Saturday, Oct 20 9 a.m. to. 1 p.m. The next class will be on Saturday Nov. 17. There are 10 students per class so that there is adequate instruction per student. Participants are required to pre-register and pay a $20.00 class fee to hold their spot.

To register please call Sharon at 778-3690 or email Borthwick@myfairpoint.net. Checks are to be made out to The Wilton Fish & Game and mailed to Sharon Borthwick, PO Box 314, West Farmington, Maine 04992. Call Scott Nichols at 778-2680 with any questionsl

The benefits of taking this class is each participant will receive a certificate of training from the Sheriff’s Office that they can use as proof of required training in order to obtain a concealed handgun permit. This certificate is recognized by the state because Sheriff Nichols is a certified firearms instructor through the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn safe gun practices. Students must bring their own unloaded hand gun in a holster with at least 50 rounds of ammunition. Also remember to bring a belt for your holster and hearing and eye protection. No magnums are allowed on the indoor range.

  1. No magnums? Is that based on cartridge size or barrel length? My 9mm and 10mm, both non magnums, but are more powerful than a .357mag for the 9mm(147grains) and on par with a .44mag for the 10mm(180grains) based on cartridge size.

  2. Christian… He’s just trying to get a rise out of us, that’s all. Anyone with the least bit of knowledge of ballistics knows that the .357 Magnum is much more powerful than the 9mm and the 10mm is no match for the .44 mag

  3. TJ that is correct we are a constitutional carry state. The new governor may take that away so it would be best to have the permit. One last thing is I would rather have every person take the class regardless of their ownership of a handgun or not. It would help more people have an understanding of guns and not spread untrue statements like we hear from anti gun quacks.

  4. TJGreaton, if you have a permit, you are allowed to carry a concealed weapon where people without permits could not. This is from the same webpage that you pointed out, further down the page:

“There will be some circumstances in which an optional handgun permit will authorize the permittee to carry in certain locations or during an activity when an unpermitted person could not:
Acadia National Park (Maine Permit required; 12 M.R.S. §756) NOTE: Pursuant to 25 M.R.S. 2001-A (2)(F), Maine will recognize a concealed handgun permit issued by another state to its resident if that state recognizes Maine’s resident concealed handgun permits. A resident permit from that state is valid for concealed carry of a handgun within Acadia National Park
State Parks (Permit required; open carry not permitted; 12 M.R.S. § 1803(7))
Regular archery hunting-deer only (Permit required; 12 MRS § 11403)
Employees’ vehicles on work premises (Permit required; vehicle must be locked and firearm must not be visible; 26 M.R.S. §600)
If an individual is carrying a concealed handgun without a permit, he/she has a duty, when coming into contact with any law enforcement officer during a routine stop, detention or arrest, to immediately inform the law enforcement officer that the individual is carrying a concealed handgun.”

  5. “..the new governor may take that away”…

    TJ:

    1) you’re assuming the gov. would be a Democrat (Mills) and

    2) We have a legislature which crafted this law, and is the only body that can UNcraft it.. A governor cannot strip citizens of constitutional rights with a phone and a pen, no matter WHAT the D’s may think or wish for.

  6. Christian Hardy, just to help you understand.
    357 mag
    135gr JHP
    Muzzle velocity 990fps
    Muzzle energy 294ft/lbs

    9mm
    147gr JHP
    Muzzle Velocity 1175fps
    Muzzle energy 45 ft/lbs

    .44mag
    180gr JHP
    Muzzle Velocity 1400fps
    Muzzle energy 763ft/lbs

    10mm
    180grDPX
    Muzzle velocity 1350fps
    Muzzle energy 728ft/lbs

The 9mm( Beretta M9) and 10mm(Glock G20) are my EDC cartridges. That is why I asked what I did. Automatic cartridges are different than revolver cartridges.
And I don’t need to be a member of a gun club to…. measure the size of my gun.

  7. JoanieD 12 M.R.S. § 1803(7)) is over ruled by subsection 6 part B, For the protection and safety of the public. The argument can be made that Maine’s constitutional carry laws supersede subsection 7 as state parks are still state property, the exception being Acadia as it is a federal jurisdiction.
