CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Following a second place finish in 2014, twenty-eight-year-old Tim Whiton, of Brunswick, took home top honors in the 2015 Sugarloaf Uphill Climb on Sunday; completing the grueling course in a time of 29 minutes and 14 seconds. Colby College’s Olivia Amber, of Lake Nebagamon Wisconsin, captured the women’s title in a time of 36:11.
In addition to the largest competitive field in event history, racers battled brisk temperatures and strong winds along the 2.5 mile course that leads to Sugarloaf’s 4,237 foot summit—the second highest peak in Maine.
Whitton, a graduate of Bates College, held a 29 second lead over second place finisher, Zane Fields, while Colby College’s Scott Harrison, rounded out the men’s overall podium with a time of 31:06.
On the women’s side, defending champion Tina-Marie Poulin clenched second place in a time of 38 minutes and 10 seconds, while 19-year-old Ellen Hands of Brunswick, finished in third place with a time of 39:31.
Following a record-setting year in 2014, this year’s field surpassed last year’s as the largest in the history of the event. “This is the first time that we’ve ever reached the 225 race cap through online preregistration,” said Ethan Austin, Sugarloaf’s Director or Marketing
The Uphill Climb is an annual tradition during Sugarloaf’s Homecoming Weekend. Other events include a Kid’s Climb, the Upcountry Artists Arts & Crafts Show, and the annual Carrabassett Valley Academy Used Ski and Sports Equipment Sale, ranked one of the top ski swaps in the east by Skiing Magazine.

Forget not that a new Sharon fellow, Rodney Porter did the up hill clime, He is over 70 years old. A real athlete.
How is Whiton’s educational background germain to his finishing the race first??? I’m speculating his educational achievement would not have been listed had he been a Husson graduate, or a CMMC grad…
Really disappointing to read this article and the lack of fact checking. I was the 2nd place women overall running it in 38:10 and also winning the 40-49 age group where again my results were not listed. Mind you, I specifically came back to Sugarloaf to run this race because I won the ladies race & set the course record last year!
You have Tina-Marie Poulin listed as a man in the 60-69 male age group running it in 38:10!!
