CARRABASSETT VALLEY – With bright leaves still covering most trees, Sugarloaf received its first snowfall of the 2014/15 season Thursday night, dusting the summit of the mountain. Temperatures dropped into the mid to upper 20s overnight, allowing the snow to fall at higher elevations.
“In this business, there is nothing more exciting than the first snow of the year,” said Jamie Walter, Sugarloaf’s snow reporter. “We typically get one or two small storms in October, and the excitement level is always through the roof.”
In addition to the first snowfall of the year, today also marks the unofficial start of the resort’s annual Homecoming Weekend that will feature an outdoor showing of the Maine Outdoor Film Festival’s summer tour, Carrabassett Valley Academy’s Used Ski and Sports Equipment Sale, and Maine’s toughest mountain run, the Sugarloaf Uphill Climb.
This weekend will also be the last chance for skiers and riders to purchase a 2014/15 New England Pass at preseason rates, as the fall deadline is Monday, Oct. 13. The pass provides access to Sugarloaf and Sunday River in Maine, and Loon Mountain in New Hampshire, and is available online at www.sugarloaf.com.
Snowmaking is scheduled to start near the end of the month, and the resort will open for the season in early to mid-November.
