UMF Fitness and Recreation Center’s Mainely Outdoors program schedule


FARMINGTON - Here is a list of the upcoming activities the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center is offering through its Mainely Outdoors Program. These programs are open to the public.

Evening Geocaching – A night of Geocaching is being offered on Monday, July 23 at 5 p.m. by the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center. Embark on a high-tech treasure hunt around Farmington to find Geo-Caches. Use a GPS tracker (provided) to locate hidden treasures and beat the clock before other teams do it first. Meet at the FRC at 4:45 p.m. Open to ages 13 & older (under 13 allowed with pre-approval and adult supervision). This event is free for all participants. Evening Mountain Bike Trip- Androscoggin River Trail (Turner) – An early evening mountain bike trip on the Androscoggin River Trail is being offered on Tuesday, July 24 at 5 p.m. by the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center. Appropriate for all levels with a wide range of trail types (single track to beginner trails). Helmets are required (FRC has helmets along with a limited supply of bikes available for rent). Meet at the FRC at 4:45 p.m. Open to ages 13 & older (under 13 allowed with pre-approval and adult supervision). Free for UMF Students & FRC Members, $5 for non-members. Intro to Canoeing (Clearwater Lake)– An intro to canoeing clinic is being offered Tuesday, July 24 at 5:30 p.m. by the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center. Join FRC Director Jim Toner in this informal class/clinic that will provide hands-on instruction on the fundamentals of paddling a canoe. Participants will learn basic paddling strokes including the forward paddle, J-stroke, draw, sweep, and pry to appropriately maneuver a canoe. Canoes, paddles & PFD’s provided. Space is limited to 12. Meet at the FRC at 5:15 p.m. Open to UMF students, faculty, staff and the community. Free for UMF Students & FRC Members, $5 for non-members. Evening Flat Water Kayak Trip (Wilson Lake) – An evening flat water kayak trip on Wilson Lake is being offered on Thursday, July 26 at 5:30 p.m. by the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center. Get out on the water and leisurely explore a local lake by kayak. Appropriate for all ability levels. Bring your own kayak or rent one from the FRC for $5. Meet at the FRC at 5:15 p.m. Open to UMF students, faculty, staff AND the community. This event is free if you bring your own kayak and or $5 for a Kayak Rental. Open to ages 13 & older (under 13 allowed with pre-approval and adult supervision). The registration deadline is Wednesday, July 25. Poplar Falls Hike (Maine Huts & Trails) – A hike around Poplar Falls is being offered on Saturday, July 28 at 10 a.m. by the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center. Come enjoy the natural beauty of Western Maine by hiking into the first hut built by Maine Hits and Trails. A 5.4 mile round-trip hike is planned along Poplar Stream to Poplar Stream Falls, and then onto the hut for lunch (bring a bag lunch and drink with you). Appropriate for all ability levels. Transportation provided by the FRC. Meet at the FRC at 9:15 a.m. Open to ages 13 & older (under 13 allowed with preapproval and adult supervision). This event is free for all participants. Intro to White Water Kayak – An intro to white water kayaking class is being offered from Monday, July 30 to Wednesday, Aug. 8th at 7 p.m. by the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center. Learn the basics of white water kayaking in four, one-hour sessions in this controlled, hands on, instructional course. This course is designed to teach basic paddling strokes, edging, eddying, ferrying, peel outs, and rolls. The first three classes take place in the FRC pool and the final class will be on the river! Open to UMF students, faculty, staff AND the community. Minimum age of 13 (under 13 allowed with pre-approval). The fee is $50 which includes kayaks, associated gear and transportation. Sunset Kayak (Bear Pond) Turner – A sunset kayak around Bear Pond is being offered on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 5:30 p.m. by the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center. Get out on the water and leisurely explore a local lake by kayak and watch the sunset with a campfire and Smores at the end. Appropriate for all ability levels. Bring your own kayak if possible – we have a limited number of kayaks available for rent. Meet at the FRC at 5:15 p.m. Open to UMF students, faculty, staff AND the community. Minimum age of 13 or if Under 13, allowed with pre-approval and adult supervision. This event is free if you bring your own kayak and it is $5 for a Kayak Rental. The registration deadline for this even is Wednesday, Aug. 1. Porter Lake Camp Out and Kayak – A kayak excursion with an overnight camp out on Porter Lake is being offered on Friday, Aug. 3-4 at 5 p.m. by the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center. Join us for a leisurely kayak on Porter Lake followed by an overnight camping experience where we will explore the island, paddle in nearby marshes and rope swing on the island! Food provided for dinner & breakfast. Must provide own tent and sleeping bag. The FRC has a small amount of camping equipment to rent if needed (please call if you have equipment needs). Meet at the FRC at 4:45 p.m. on Aug. 3. Open to ages 13 & older (under 13 allowed with preapproval and adult supervision). Program fee is $15 for UMF Students and FRC members, and $20 for non-members. Registration deadline is Wednesday Aug. 1.
