FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team (7-5) battled Saint Joseph’s and the soggy conditions of mother nature, but came out on the wrong end of a 2-0 shutout Tuesday afternoon at Prescott Field.

The game only saw a total of 10 shots, including only two shots in the first half, both taken by the Beavers.

Saint Joseph’s pressed the Beavers defense back in front of their own goal and Kelsey Dumond capitalized. After a deflected pass, Effie Drew carved the end line and dished a cross to Dumond sitting in front of the Beavers, who one-timed the shot into the cage in the 42nd minute to give the Monks the 1-0 advantage.

St. Joe’s stayed on the attack and scored 31 seconds later. Kayley Winslow returned a rebound after a save by UMF keeper Patty Smith for the game’s final margin.

Patty Smith saved two shots for the Beavers. The Monks used two keepers for the shutout as Emma Astbury saved a shot and Hillary Nash recorded three saves.

UMF travels to Waterville on Saturday at 11 a.m. to play Thomas in the regular season finale.
