BANGOR – University of Maine at Farmington junior righthander Joe Sullivan scattered three hits while his Beaver teammates pounded out 10 hits off three different Lyndon State pitchers on their way to a 12-0 shutout of the Hornets, in game one of a North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader played Saturday at Husson University’s Winkin Complex.
Farmington could not carry that momentum into the nightcap, and Lyndon State salvaged the split with a 9-4 win in game two.
The Beavers (5-15, 4-6 NAC) scored in every inning in game one, with a three-run fourth inning that gave Farmington an 8-0 lead.
Trevor Hisler went 3-for-3 at the plate in game one, while Jordan Croteau and Sean Cabaniss each had a pair of hits. Ben Keene drove in three runs, and Dustin McCrossin plated two more on his home run in the third inning. UMF’s last four hitters in the order went 8-for-11 in the first game, with eight runs and three RBI.
Devon Rollins and Tyler Pelletier had singles for Lyndon State (4-6, 4-6 NAC), while Mike Cartularo tripled into center field in the second inning.
Sullivan faced 24 batters over seven innings on his way to his second complete game conference shutout of the season. He allowed just one walk and fanned four Hornets. Zach Hatin took the loss for Lyndon State, after yielding three earned runs on three hits and one walk over two complete innings.
Lyndon State’s four-run uprising in the fifth inning put the Hornets in front, 5-2, in game two and provided a lead that Lyndon would not relinquish. Chris Sevigney’s two-out, three-run triple to right center keyed the inning, after three previous batters reached on a hit-by-pitch, an error, and a walk.
Farmington got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Lyndon State added two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win.
Ian Sackett allowed three earned runs on five hits with two walks, but was credited with the win for the Hornets. UMF starter Kyle Peterson gave up just three hits and fanned five Hornets, but was on the hook for five runs, only one earned, and took the loss.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series on Sunday, April 13, at the Winkin Complex in Bangor, Maine.
