Castleton College defeats UMF, 49-47

FARMINGTON – Makayla Farrara’s career high 25 points led Castleton College over the University of Maine at Farmington by a score of 49-47 at Dearborn Gymnasium Friday night.

The Beavers will fall to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the North Atlantic Conference while the Spartans move to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

The first quarter opened up with the Beavers getting on the board first with two free throws from Morgan Crocker. Almost mid-way through the quarter, Makayla Farrara hit her first basket of the game for the Spartans.

Farrara hit back-to-back free throws to put the Spartans up by four in the early going. The Beavers hit a three by Emma Duggan to take a 6-7 lead about two minutes later. The Spartans came right back and hit a three of their own to take the 11-7 lead.

At the end of the first quarter the Beavers were down two after Farrara hit a three with one-minute left.

Kennadi Grover opened the second quarter with a jumper to tie the game at 14. After the tie, each team played back and forth action for the rest of the quarter.

Amanda Beatty made a layup to give the Spartans a one point lead followed by a Farrara layup to increase their lead to three, (22-19).

With two minutes to go, Castleton went up by five when Beatty hit a free throw. The Beavers tied the game again with a three from Cheyenne Malloy and a layup by Grover.

Farrara would close out the half with a three of her own and give Castleton a 28-25 lead.

Grover opened up the third with a quick layup followed by a free throw to tie the game at 28. Farrara hit a layup just 15 seconds to give the Spartans a 30-28 lead.

Paige Carter hit a jumper at the half waypoint of the third to cut into the Spartans lead (34-33). Farrara hit another three to give Castleton the 37-34 lead. Sara Lamb hit a free throw and Groverhit a jumper to close out the quarter for the Beavers. Lindsay Sabo hit a layup with six seconds left on the clock to give the Spartans a two point lead going into the forth (39-37).

Castleton jumped out to a seven-point lead just two minutes into the forth quarter but Abby Hasson but the lead to three after a layup and a free throw at the five-minute mark. Carter hit a jumper of her own to cut the lead to one (46-45) with three minutes to go.

The Spartans went back up by four with a three-point play by Sabo. The Beavers hit a quick jumper to pull within two.

Farmington played great defense and got the ball back with 13 seconds remaining in the game. Grover took a shot with four seconds left the hit the front of the iron and gave the Spartans the two point win (49-47).

The Beavers will host Green Mountain College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
