Class of 2014 inducted into UMF Athletics Hall of Fame

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington inducted the Class of 2014 to the UMF Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday night which included a current NBA head coach, three two-sport athletes, a 1,000 point scorer, and a men’s basketball playmaker.

Steve Clifford has been working his way through the NBA ranks as a coach since 2000. After assuming assistant coaching roles with the New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Lakers. Clifford accepted his first NBA head coaching position prior to the 2013-14 season with the Charlotte Hornets.

He started his career as a college assistant with Saint Anselm, Fairfield University, Boston University, and Siena College before accepting a head coaching job at Adelphi University.

As a student-athlete, he tallied 250 career points over his four years in Farmington, along with 113 rebounds. Clifford amassed 125 assists in his senior season at UMF, and tallied 260 assists over his final three seasons.

Clifford graduated with a degree in special education and currently lives in Charlotte, N.C.

Jamie Beaudoin ranks among the most accomplished all-around student-athletes to pass through UMF. Beaudion was a two sport student-athlete who played for the Beavers from 1993 to 1997.

In soccer, Beaudoin is tied for fourth among UMF single season leaders in points (40, 1996) and for the program record in assists (14, 1996). He ranks sixth among UMF soccer’s career leaders in points (85) and goals (34), and ninth in assists (17). A two-time First Team All-American, Beaudoin was an NAIA Scholar-Athlete in both those seasons in both men’s soccer and men’s basketball.

In basketball, Beaudoin played four seasons for UMF men’s basketball, finishing with career totals of 803 points, 281 rebounds, and 337 assists, ninth among UMF career leaders. He also recorded 129 career three-pointers, 11th among Farmington’s all-time leaders, and his 154 career steals is good enough for fourth all-time.

Beaudoin graduated with a degree in elementary education and serves as UMF’s associate athletic airector and women’s basketball head coach.

Laughn Berthiaume was a two sport student-athlete who finished his career as Farmington’s all-time leader in goals (56), assists (34), and points (146) over his four-year career from 1994 to 1998. His 25 goals and 59 points in 1996 were both UMF single season records.

A two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American, Berthiaume was a three-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete and received all-conference and all-region honors during his men’s soccer career.

On the basketball court, Berthiaume logged career totals of 831 points, 238 rebounds, and 161 assists. His 138 career three-pointers ranks ninth among UMF career leaders, and he holds UMF’s career free throw percentage record with a .844 mark at the line.

Berthiaume graduated with a degree in education and teaches math at Gorham High School in Gorham, and coaches girls’ basketball.

Caryn Lasante played basketball from 1994 to 1998 under head coach Len MacPhee at UMF, and finished her collegiate career with 1,153 points – one of just 14 1,000-point scorers in program history. Upon graduation, she ranked sixth on the all-time scoring list.

She was team captain her senior year and a First Team All-Conference selection in the Maine Athletic Conference in 1996, 1997, and 1998, and held the program’s career blocks record with 152 at the time of graduation.

Lasante ranks fourth all-time with a career field goal percentage of .544. She is seventh in rebounding talling 701 boards. She holds the fourth best season in terms of blocks with 50. Her season of 233 rebounds in 1995 ranks eighth best in school history.

Lasante earned her degree in education and currently teaches English at Thornton Academy in Saco.

Daren Meader ranks second among UMF men’s basketball scoring leaders, after finishing his career with 1,819 points. Meader was a Third Team All-American in 2000 and Honorable Mention selection in 1999.

Meader also ranks second in career steals (183) and fifth in career assists (472), while earning All-Maine, All-Conference, and Maine Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors over the course of his career.

Meader was also an accomplished student-athlete on the baseball diamond, where he ranks third on the all-time list in hits (103), RBI’s (74), doubles (24), and career batting average of .368. He is second on the UMF list with 12 career home runs.

Meader graduated with a degree in business economics and works for Texas Instruments in South Portland.

Jared Rivers was an Honorable Mention All-American in 2000, after a season in which he scored 429 points. Rivers played two seasons for the Beavers, recording 431 points in 1998-99 as a junior.

He earned both All-Maine and all-conference honors, and finished his career ranked fourth among the program’s leaders in field goal percentage.

Rivers averaged 18.3 points per game, ranking him sixth all-time. Rivers’ shooting ability puts him 13th all-time with a .573 field goal percentage. Rivers’ leaping and anticipation abilities played a key role in his being ranked seventh on the UMF career blocked shots list, with a total of 57 in his career.

Rivers earned his degree in history and currently serves as the associate dean of admissions at Bates College.
