NEW LONDON, N.H. – Colby-Sawyer College advances and the University of Maine at Farmington ended it season with a, 62-58, victory in the North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal game on Tuesday evening.
The Beavers held a two-point in the first two minutes but had to play catch-up for the remainder of the half. Colby-Sawyer led by as many as 11 points by the 7:08 mark but UMF clawed back with a mini-run to close out the half, trailing 33-32 at the break. Meghan Smith (Boothbay, Maine) was a bucket away from a first half double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds. Colby-Sawyer’s Amanda Calvo scored nearly half of the team’s first half points by shooting 6-of-8 from the field and 3 of 4 from long range for 15 points.
The two teams traded baskets for the entire second half as neither team was going to give an inch. In the final minute, the Beavers had a chance to tie the game. Trailing by three, Kelly Pomerleau (Turner, Maine) drove to the hole and tried to draw the foul in the lane, but her shot would not fall and Chargers came down with the rebound.
Upon the rebound, the Beavers were forced to foul and CSC made one of two free throws to seal the victory and move on to the NAC semifinal at Castleton.
Smith finished the game with 15 points and 17 rebounds. Elizabeth Ferry added 12 points and nine rebounds. Calvo was the game’s leading scorer with 23 points and sank five three-pointers.
Farmington finished the season with a record of 11-15 and falls in the quarterfinal round for the second straight season.
