Farmington Recreation Department announces 22nd season of ‘prep’ soccer

6 mins read

FARMINGTON – Registrations are now being taken for boys and girls, kindergarten students ages 5 and 6, wanting to take part in the local Recreation Department’s entry-level soccer program, “Prep” Soccer.

This non-competitive format successfully introduced 45 youngsters last year to the sport of soccer in a pressure-free atmosphere. Held in the outfield of the Little League Park at Hippach Field, this six week program will concentrate solely on teaching the elementary skills of soccer. There will be no roster assignments, no playing schedules to follow and no trophies to win in “Prep” Soccer. Children will learn about the sport and practice fundamentals through fun games, simple drills and exercises and abbreviated pick-up scrimmages.

This fall the program will be under the guidance of Nicole Pires. Pires is entering her Junior year at Mt. Blue High School and plays on the Girls Varsity Soccer Team. She has been one of our best soccer coaches here at the Rec. Dept. and has helped with the “Prep” Soccer Program in the past. She is wonderful with children and we are excited to have her directing the program this year.

A single group of players will meet each Sunday afternoon at 2:15 p.m. for practices. If the turnout for this program is heavy, there may be a need to split the participants into two groups. If that is the case, one group will start at 2:15 p.m. and the other at 3:30 p.m. There would be no connotation to these groups such as girls and boys, athletic children vs. slower developing players. Players would simply be divided alphabetically by the first letter of their last name. To ensure maximum individual attention, approximately 50 percent of the participants need to be in each group.

Occasionally, a participant who demonstrates advanced ability may be given the opportunity to be “called up” to fill a roster vacancy that developed in Division I of the Instructional Soccer League.

This year the Registration Period will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 9, Wednesday, Sept. 10 and Thursday, Sept. 11. The Recreation Department Office will stay open until 6 p.m. on Thursday only for your convenience. Registrations will not be taken over the phone.

Registration Fee for “Prep” Soccer is $ 25 and a $5 Non-Resident Fee is charged to those who do not reside in or pay property taxes to the Town of Farmington (defined as Farmington, West Farmington, Farmington Falls and Fairbanks). A souvenir “Prep” Soccer T- shirt will be provided to each participant at no extra cost.

Protective shin guards are optional and may be purchased at a cost of $5 per pair. Checks for shin guards should be payable to “Game Day Athletic.”

Please note: To assist the Recreation Department in tracking payments for any of the program fees, it is our preference to accept only personal checks or money orders. Additionally, all transactions involving program costs must take place at the Farmington Community Center to ensure proper receipting. We appreciate your cooperation.

Please note: Any family requesting consideration for program fee subsidy must check the appropriate box on the program registration card.

If insurance coverage is desired, it is the responsibility of the participant.

The following is a list of dates for the 2014 program. Practices will be held only on these dates and everything will take place in the Little League Park at Hippach Field. Parking is limited at Hippach Field so parents are encouraged to park in the Lower Learning Center parking lot at Abbott Park at the University of Maine at Farmington.
