Farmington Recreation Department is pleased to announce ‘cabin fever’ programs in March

FARMINGTON – March Madness? Nah, it’s time to put your basketball away! After a long, hard, winter the next playing seasons coming up on the calendar are outside Spring sports. Best guess would be that those game fields and courts won’t be ready much before April 1. As a result, the Farmington Recreation Department will try to offer three “filler” programs – something to fill the down-time between Winter ball and Spring training.

In addition to our highly successful Indoor Soccer program, run by Fred Conlogue, we are happy to again offer the following “Cabin Fever” programs. They are designed for a limited number of children and will be held once a week inside in the Bjorn Gymnasium at Farmington Community Center.

Middle School Indoor Lacrosse
This 5 week program for players in grades 6, 7 and 8 will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:45 p.m. – 8 p.m.. Lacrosse will begin on March 4 and continue until April 1. The program will be directed by Kevin Averill. Kevin is currently the Varsity Lacrosse coach at Mt. Blue High School, was the assistant coach of the UMF Men’s Lacrosse team and played at Thomas College. He has worked with the Rec. Dept. in the past and was also an award winning coach in our Jr. Pro basketball program.

Participants will be taught the basic rules of lacrosse and technical drills such as catching, throwing and scooping up ground balls, with an opportunity to apply those skills during scrimmages. This will be an entry level, non-contact lacrosse activity that gives new players a chance to prepare for a Middle School Lacrosse program that might begin in May.

Sticks, gloves, helmets and mouth guards will be provided by the Rec. Dept.

Please note: This program is limited to the first 18 to register. Any additional personal protective equipment is the responsibility of the participant. The fee to participate is $15 payable to the instructor.

Indoor Field Hockey
This introductory program will expose players in grades 3, 4 and 5 to the basics of field hockey, emphasizing important skills while teaching basic rules and team strategies in drills and scrimmages. Sticks, protective eyewear and mouthguards will be provided by the Rec. Dept.

Field Hockey will be held on Wednesday evenings beginning March 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will finish on April 1. Serving as Director this year is Sarita Crandall. Sarita has played Field Hockey since 7th grade, she was on the Varsity team at Mt. Blue High School for 4 years, two of those years she served as Captain of her team. She is finishing her freshman year at UMF where she received Rookie of the Week as well as being placed on First Team North Atlantic Conference. Sarita is very excited to work with the children and hopes to pass on her passion for the sport to the next generation!
A registration fee of $ 15 will be paid to Sarita Crandall and due to equipment and space this program is limited to the first 12 participants, so early registration is strongly advised.

Saturday Morning “BP”
If your children are running out of patience waiting for Cal Ripken Baseball or Babe Ruth Softball, we’re happy to give aspiring players in grades 4, 5 and 6 the chance to come to our gym for some Saturday morning BP or “Batting Practice”. Supervised and instructed by our own staff the children will have the opportunity to hit against our pitching machine, given pointers to improve their throwing and fielding using our “softee” baseballs or softballs and even play a wiffleball scrimmage just for fun.

Scott Peacock will be directing this program again every Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. beginning Saturday, March 7th and ending Saturday, April 4th. Scott is a Sophomore at UMF and has been playing baseball since he was five years old, with three years on the Monmouth Varsity team, five years of umpiring and two years of little league evaluations. Scott will be assisted by another one of our staff member in workouts with baseball players.

A student on the UMF Softball team and fellow Rec. Dept. Staff supervisor, Hannah Lust, will be on hand again this year to help Scott work with softball players.

A limited number of spaces are available for the five Saturdays this program is run. The cost is $5 per training session and attendance will top out each week at the first 10 to register and pay to participate.
